I still remember being 14 and picking up this right after finishing Heir to the Empire and to me in high school the Wraith books were great. And they lead me to trying to read all the other Star Wars EU...

With mixed results of course.
He will be missed, AA managed to do the one thing 99% of EU authors failed to do. Create a cast of original interesting characters who fit right in with the movies.

That's sad. Oddly enough the other day I was just thinking about who much I enjoyed those old books when I was younger and how I wanted to pick them up again.

Really sucks, I felt the Wraith Squadron series was the best part of the EU.

Wow. This is sad.

I mean I knew he had heart troubles in the past but still… He was a great writer. He actually made the Legacy of the Force barely tolerable when he wrote his parts. He will be missed dearly.

In Allston's honor, I'd like offer up a resounding and immortal "Yub Yub, Commander."

Hear hear. The EU has lost one of its best.

He was one of the bright stars in the vast blackness of the EU, one of the diamonds across the acres of rough. He will be sorely missed.

Ah shit. His books were great.

RIP Aaron. Know that people remember you work fondly.

Allston may not have been the best of the the EU authors, but at least for me, he was the funniest. People don't remember 'Yub, Yub, Commander' for nothing. The Wraith Squadron books were the only EU to ever make me literally lough out loud. 'At least morale was high'.

May The Force be with him.

Yeah.

While I'd read his post-X-Wing novels, his work didn't really blow me away in the same manner as, say, James Luceno or Matthew Stover.

After reading the Wraith Squadron trilogy -- and especially after Iron Fist -- I changed my mind.

Allston's humor and ability to create endearing, fully dimensional, and original characters, elevated him to the #4 slot on my Top 5 favorite Star Wars novelists (behind Luceno, Stover, and Zahn).

Oh fuck.

Allston was easily my favorite Star Wars author. Hell, he'd place pretty high on my list of favorite authors period. The only problem I ever had with his writing was that there wasn't more of it.

Guess now would be a good time to finish his book on plotting.

Yub yub, Commander. :(

Luminous beings are we, not this crude matter.

I had a sinking feeling I wasn't going to find good news on theforce.net , last week.

It's a bit late, but since I'm reading Mercy Kill, I'd like to follow up with perhaps the single best line of the entire EU -- the Wraith Squadron motto:

"Pretty. What do we blow up first?"

There will be a memorial service for any Texas locals. Here
