Oh, and, so much for the Endor Holocaust.

As for context, that base was discovered sometime between the celebration and the following morning.RogueIce wrote:But...what was it covering, since the Rebels were clearly in the Ewok village at the end of RotJ? What was the point of this second shield generator? Why were they just standing around apparently completely unaware of anything else that happened? Or are we supposed to believe there was some battle in between Han and Leia kissing and the celebration?
We need a shitload more context about this second base.
Then how did all the Rebels get on the planet for the celebration? Since they only discovered it after their party? And how would they have not known about this if they needed to pass through it?Galvatron wrote:In lieu of an actual explanation in the comic, my guess is that it was covering Endor itself while the shield generator the rebels destroyed was only protecting the Death Star.
I think it was a direct response to the Endor holocaust debate. But the problem is that the Rebel fleet and Death Star debries were at the same point in space. Either the Rebel fleet and debries would make it through, or they should both be stopped.RogueIce wrote:Then how did all the Rebels get on the planet for the celebration? It just comes across as an asspull, to have another battle on Endor because...reasons? I really don't know why they even bothered with this instead of, I don't know, hitting some Imp garrison elsewhere. But that would take too much creativity I guess.
If that were the caee, if would be rather useless as a defensive system. And why would the Rebel force not notice this until the next morning?Anacronian wrote:In Episode 1 the battle droids could walk through the Gungan's shields presumably because walking is very slow compared to a blaster shot, Perhaps the Endor shields allow slow moving transports to pass through but are a formidable barrier to a turbo laser shot(or incoming Death Star Debris)?
It would be a great defence against orbital bombardment - also planetary shields are not uncommon in the SW universe it might just be a case of "ah planetary shields well lets reduce speed and look into that later", In fact that could be how all planetary shields work, you reduce speed to pass through them, But I'm just spitballing here.Adamskywalker007 wrote:If that were the caee, if would be rather useless as a defensive system. But if that were the case, why did the shield need to be lowered for Han's shuttle?Anacronian wrote:

Good question.Adamskywalker007 wrote:But if that were the case, why did the shield need to be lowered for Han's shuttle?Anacronian wrote:

Well that possibility was always there with or without the planetary shields.Bernkastel wrote:Also, it would raise the possibility of using fighters from the rebel fleet that would fly slowly through the shield, while covered by other fighters and the fleet, and then blow up the Death Star shield generator. Given how desperate the battle was, you'd then have to wonder why the idea was not considered.
This came from Brian Young's argument that capital ship shields are permeable. The problem with this idea is that other than the Death Star, which was specifically stated to have weak defenses against fighter attacks, we don't actually see any evidence in favor of fighters launching unsupported attacks successfully. Examples from Clone Wars are inconsistent enough that the films not showing it at all is enough for me to say it is unlikely to work in general even if it is possible in certain cases. Especially since most visual evidence seems to indicate that shields are hull hugging. We don't see shield interactions well above the surface of the ships the way we would if they formed a bubble that it were possible to fly under.Bernkastel wrote:Also, it would raise the possibility of using fighters from the rebel fleet that would fly slowly through the shield, while covered by other fighters and the fleet, and then blow up the Death Star shield generator. Not if it could block incoming ships.Anacronian wrote:Well that possibility was always there with or without the planetary shields.
That could be possible. It would mean that they would be trapped under the shield.Anacronian wrote:Okay this is the only scenario I can see - The planetary shields do block ship but when the Death Star exploded the debris "overloaded" the shields and while the shields did protected Endor from most of the debris they had to be taken down - Rebels land and celebrates and by morning the shields are fixed and back up.
