What happened to Luke's ladder?

In Empire Strikes Back, when Luke knows his friends are in danger, he packs up his crap and leaves for Bespin. Here is the scene:
Luke uses a ladder to board his X-wing, which disappears in the next shot. What happened to it? If it retracted into the X-wing, why did the flight crew move ladders around in A New Hope?
