The limiting factor is almost certainly the velocity at which it can orbit a planet.

In RotJ the Executor made it from the far side of Endor to cut off the Rebel Fleet in minutes. Talk about a snowball from hell.

Except that was moving to a certain target. Movement while performing a BDZ would likely be slower and more methodical, although I agree with the sentiment that it wouldn't take very long at all.Cal Wright wrote:In RotJ the Executor made it from the far side of Endor to cut off the Rebel Fleet in minutes. I was thinking, would a star destroyer be able to simply use it's ion cannons for a BDZ operation? Just simply ionize the oceans? How bad do you think the ion storms on planet surface would get after that? Kind of a "BDZ lite" operation, if it's plausible.

I'm not sure if Ion cannons would work that way. It's possible, I suppose, but why bother?irishmick79 wrote:I was thinking, would a star destroyer be able to simply use it's ion cannons for a BDZ operation? Just simply ionize the oceans? Eclipse Star Destroyer wouldnt bother with a BDZ...just fire the fucking superlaser.FettKyle wrote:I heard it would take an ISD 27 hours to totaly destroy the planet I would imagine that a ESD doing just BDZ would take a very short while.

This was actually done once, albeit on a much smaller scale. An ISD used its weapons to super-heat the ocean around a particular city, and the resultant steam-cload pressure-cooked everyone there, making for easy mop-up operations. However, since a BDZ requires that a planet be entirely slagged, ion cannons targetting the oceans would be insufficient.irishmick79 wrote:I was thinking, would a star destroyer be able to simply use it's ion cannons for a BDZ operation? Also, the non-destructive nature of an ion cannon is a myth. Given that the ion cannon seems to more or less rely on a stream of relatavisticly-moving charged particles (the only way I can think of to get any real range from it) as well as various canon and official quotes indicating the destructive nature of the weapon - I find it inconceivable that anyone would think they are harmless.
Incidentally, the first Rogue Squadron novel features ion cannons bombarding a planetary target (which admittedly is protected by planetary shields) and dispersed energies radiating off the shield destroyed nearby forests and b uildings, IIRC.

The bombardment included TL's at the start, they cut back to Ion Cannon to avoid dammage to the base once the sheild started to draw back.Connor MacLeod wrote:Also, the non-destructive nature of an ion cannon is a myth.
