Who is Jaster Mereel?

I have this acquaintance that refuses to watch any of the new (ep 1, 2) star wars movies, and refuses to accept any of the information revealed in them. Regardless of how inane this is, this is what he said about Boba Fett, and claims this is(was) widely accepted.

Boba Fett's real name is Jaster Mereel. He was a Journeyman Protector (kinda like a Judge in Judge Dredd) on Concorde Down. He attacked a superior officer and was arrested, but he escaped.

While it's not proven, it's the most widely accepted theory.

What the hell?! I had never heard this before. It's (obviously) wrong, but does anyone know where this info had been obtained from?

You're friend is an idiot. Smack him in the face and tell him LFL policy is CANON (movies, novelizations, scripts, radiodramas) over OFFICIAL (any and all EU). If he doesn't want to believe you, kick him in the nuts and tell him Iannazzo sent you. God, I hate idiots.

Either way, the secrets of Jaster Mereel are revealed in "Jango Fett: Open Seasons" I believe. I've never read it, so I can't really help you, but GEEZ! That guy pisses me off and I've never met him.

So this guy put some half-ass writer's word over that of GL! Put some chlorine in his gene pool.

Jaster Mereel is actually Jango's adopted father or so Jango's history goes...

Your friend is a whiner who can't accept reality.
Regardless of how inane this is, this is what he said about Boba Fett, and claims this is(was) widely accepted.
Well, let's take a look, shall we?

Allright, here we go.

Your friend is both right and wrong. Much of Boba Fett's original background (IE, before EpII) came from a novel called TALES OF THE BOUNTY HUNTERS. In it, it's reveal that a young man named Jaster Mereel killed a fellow protector and was exiled from Concord Dawn (not injured, and not escaped, as your friend claims).

However, the Dark Horse comic books about Jango Fett give us new info. Jaster Mereel was the name of a Mandalorian who took Jango in after he was orphaned as child and taught him everything he knew about combat. When Jaster was killed, Jango became leader of the Mandalorians.

Later, the Mandalorian army was wiped out by the Jedi, but Jango escaped and became a bounty hunter. When Boba was 'born.' Jango naturally taught him all about his own past. After Jango's death, Boba somehow made his way to Concord Dawn and adopted the name Jaster Mereel. After his exile, he reassumed his true name and went to work as a bounty hunter.

Well, thanks Iggy for the explanation.

The first part I knew but never seen the comic books about Jango.

Darth Gnome, IG-88, Lennox, thanks for clearing that up for me.

Notice that i used the word acquaintance

Knowledge of a person acquired by a relationship less intimate than friendship.

Darth Gnome, I have taken your suggestions into consideration. :D

This made me think of this picture, which allegedly shows an unmasked Boba Fett...

Image

However, this "Boba Fett" looks rather Scandinavian - a glaring inconstistency with AOTC, where the Fetts were portrayed by Maori actors.

woohoo!

Good to know that that little continuity quirk got worked into the canon.

It didn't. That's official.

Just because the canon origin sucks doesn't mean it's not canon...

Plastic surgery, perhaps? Frankly, if I were Fett, I'd take it as a worthwhile precaution to change my appearance from that of a few million clonetroopers running around...

The healing factor of bacta would make surgery that is normally too drastic into something that is viable (as long as you have the credits).

Is that Jeremy Bulloch, by chance?

I don't think so. Doesn't really look like him. Besides, he appears unmasked as an Imperial officer, so it doesn't really make sense for him to be unmasked as Boba Fett.

Or maybe Boba Fett and Jaster Mereel exchanged names (alongside with Boba's armour) at a time when one of them was escaping from the law.

Of course, this hypothesis is not only mere speculation, it's also contradicts official litterature.

*Shrug* After watching AotC, I just naturally assumed that Jaster Mereel was the name he took on after his father died. Makes perfect sense, and fits in with official/canon.

Indeed. It should be made perfectly clear that the events as dictated in AOTC do not, in any way, contradict the origin story of Boba Fett in the novel.

Where did that pic come from anyway?
And I agree with SPOOFE. Fett would have probably had his appearance changed, and maybe even his genes altered.

Technically, what he said works, canon could be used as an all-encompassing word for continuity.
Also, there is actually no official, the correct term is quasi-canon.
But official is the common colloquial term.

That picture is in jest, you idiot. X-E does picture edits for humourous effect all the fucking time.

Shit, you can clearly tell it's a photo edit, because it looks exactly the same as an ESB picture of Fett with his helmet ON.

God damn it, you're just too dense to know that...
