I can't help it, Admiral Piett is one of my favorite SW characters. I don't know what it is, but I just have this fascination with him. I think it is maybe Colley's performance, which is very sympathetic. You get a sense that he is not at all an evil man, thus showing the Imperials were mostly just ordinary folks doing their job, albeit in the service of an evil regime.

*shrugs* maybe it's just my own weirdness!

Piett is extremely professional, and he somehow managed to avoid soiling himself when Vader turned around to face him after they lost Luke at the end of TESB.

I think him reporting Ozzel's failure would've been just as a soiling moment.

The man has balls of brass. Face it, he rocks.

This is one of the reasons I HATE the EU's portrayal of virtually every high-ranking Imperial officer as an arrogant and corpulent dumbass. Veers and Piett were competent and professional. Hell, Needa and even Ozzel were better than the morons in the comics and novels (with the exception of Thrawn and Pellaeon).

Vader seems to be "nicer" to Piett than to anyone else. It's as if he almost likes the man. In RoTJ, his tone towards the Admiral is really mellow and seems to be one of trust.

I think we need a first name for Piett, too. How about Pierre?

What does EU stand for, out of curiosity?

Yeah, Needa got screwed because he had the guts to accept responsibility for his failure, even though he could hardly be blamed for it.

Tagge was another (apparently) quite competent Imperial who had a lot more sense in him than the "stereotypical Imperial." And then there's Tarkin's aide, too! Smart fella. I always like to think he beat it to an escape pod right after that scene.

But yes. Piett is a great character.

Veers made a good-faith effort to save Ozzel's life; that was probably more of a risk than most Imperial officers would take.

The military probably loathed Vader. It doesn't surprise me that Veers would make an effort to save Ozzel's life from that capricious dick.

The New Essential Guide to Characters confirms that his first name is Firmus.


And Baron Scarpia: EU stands for Extended Universe. It's everything SW that isn't a movie.

I'm used to Apolyton, which has a little bit different quote structure.

Well... If you give the Star Wars Holiday Special *shudder* any offical status Tarkin's aid and Tagge apparently escaped before the DS blew up.

Read the NEGTC.

Veers is described as a cool, professional, "solder's soldier" and Piett is described as a hard-working and brilliant officer who excelled despite a lack of brown-nosing or political contacts.

Wow! That's awesome! I'd always kinda hoped those guys survived the first DS. I figure a lot of personel would have gotten wind of something being wrong and would have evacuated the base. Certainly the "we" in "We have analyzed their attack..." would have had good reason to jump ship.

I for one never liked Piett. My take on him was he was a little weasel that ratted out on Ozzel the first oppurtunity he got. Watch the scenbe where he first appears and how he staged the whole discovery at Hoth thing precisely to attract Vader's attention.

He is not a militray genuis and more like an ambitious cronie.

Lets face it, Piett just looks professional. Ozzel looks goofy. And while Piett speaks with an aura of coolness about him, he doesn't race his voice, he has a quiet mellow tone. Ozzel sounds (not is, sounds) like a blithering bloke of an officer; his way of speech is arrogant, and again he looks goofy.

If I were Vader I would've choked Ozzel too, just for the above reasons.

Still, Veers is the coolest Imperial officer of the entire trilogy. So professional.

The reason he staged the Hoth discovery was because he KNEW Ozzel wouldn't have considered it. That was a smart move on Piett's part. After all, Piett was right.

The NEGTC casts him in a different light. Vader was said to keep, "many of the Empire's best officers around him, without regard for their political standing."

Apparently, Piett was the man for the job.
