...what do you think they're good for? Are they industrail s, or scrapped together?

Probably both, they were alot of scrap on those ships, which could be made into droids, assuming Jawas are smart enough..

One was an older version of the r2 unit. R3 I think it was? From what I remember reading, most of those driods were quite useful at one time. Does anyone remember the GRONK driod? I think it was a box with two legs. Anyhow, the GRONK was a walking battery for other driods.

Actually, the Gonk droid is a fusion reactor. There was also an R1 reactor droid, and a Bantha droid, and some other assorted makes and models there.
The one that blew up was an R4, which according to SWEGD was an extremely cheap and shoddy unit.

Thought it was an R5 unit? Or was it an R2 unit that had the bad motivator. Thwap stupid farmboy. heh.

The droid with the bad motivater was definately an R2 unit:
LUKE: [whiny voice]Uncle Owen, this R2 unit has a bad motivater. Look. [/whiny voice]

Which is really funny because in the Radio Drama, Uncle Owen calls it an R5.

Really? I didn't know that one.
Well, as we all know, movies override radio dramas...
Or perhaps Luke just has no idea what he's talking about. Still, its not like Luke has much to do on the farm. My bet is that he'd probably have more than enough time to learn about droid models and such.

the official material call the droid an R5 unit, too.

Someone who knows little about car manufacturers could mistake a Holden for a Falcon. It's more or less the same thing in Luke's case.

I seem to remember the action figure version being refered to as "R5D4" but I think they were just trying to come up with some way to differentiate it more from R2D2.

D'OH! Sorry everyone, disregard my post. It was an R5, not an R4. I wasn't looking at what I typed.
I think Luke was mistaken. Dialogue is always subject to analysis, and that unit was clearly different in size and shape than R2D2. It is also possible that the R2 unit has become so legendary due to its utility that all astromech droids can be referred to as R2 units. Remember that the R2 was a gigantic step up from any of the other units previously available.

the dorid that has a bad motivator is a R5 unit. Luke calls it an Artoo unit because lets face it. Real Life: people making SW didnt think it was going to be a hit, not alot of people knew what the hell was going on and who the characters are. Remember the puppeters and character desing people didnt even have names for the aliens in the cantina. SW Galaxy: Lukes a farm boy and knows almost nothing but farming and the empire vs the rebelian.
plus only a year later with the relese of Splinter of the Minds eye in 1978 Alan Dean Foster called R2-D2 a Detto unit.

There was one with a bunch of arms, I was thinking it would be for housework, and one that was a giant black lump.

The one with the dome was a mine laying droid, for demolitions work.
