Was reading Galaxy Guide: Bespin and Yavin, which I got in the mail:
it lists Cloud City's total population at 5+ million!

Cloud City is big enough to support that kind of population?

Seem high, the whole thing is a mining station and probably mostly driod run. The cityscape was big, but it didn't look that big to me. Though how far below it desenceds isn't known.

It's also apparently a tourist attraction too...

Does have an interesting view I guess. Five million, that's the size of small instillations the Empire doesn't even pay attention to. :D

According to this, the first 50 stories of Cloud City are devoted entirely
to the tourist trade

The 5 million figure isnt that surprising to me.

Hmmm....NYC has millions of people and it's probably a two-thirds the size of Cloud City.

Not farfetched.

I don't understand...is Cloud City such a rare place? You'd figure they'd have hundreds of these installations on Bespin to mine the Tibanna gas and whatever other gases are mined. Hell, they had this installation on a gas giant called Taloraan in Rogue Squadron that looked just like Cloud City.

NYC is about 8-10 million. And most of NYC isnt solid durasteel structure miles high.

theyve probably got living spaces as small as economical hotel rooms outside of Tokyo, with studio apartments costing uber amounts. Such is rent on a property out o the Imperial eye.

The one on Taloraan was pretty small though. I guess Cloud City is the largest example of a floating mining colony or something.

That would be a capsule hotel, and i doubt it! :)

Capsule Hotels on Cloud City? Not likely. There's no room for your blaster!

Wrong, Kojikun...

That's a novelty hotel, not an economy hotel.

Are beaches such a rare place? You'd figure they'd have hundreds of these "beach resort" places ... oh yeah, they do. And people go. Coruscant alone must account for a huge tourist trade, since people must get tired of the endless skyscrapers sooner or later.

A lot of NYC is open air and most residence buildings are houses or apartment complexes some ten stories high or so. Cloud City is a structure and has the benefit of having no open air to waste space on.

A 6 x 6 x 2 maybe be wider than a 4 x 4 x 6, like how NYC is wider than Cloud City (assumption here), but the total volume of the 4x4x6 is greater than that of the 6x6x2.

Cloud City has more volume space to use.

Note: I know very little about NYC so forgive me if I get anything wrong.

Its actually not novelty, they're mainly for businessmen who just need a place to snooze between workdays, incase they live terribly far from their place of work.

And I WAS joking, Spanky. I imagined the concept of "small" and "cheap" went together, and these are VERY small, so you'd think they're very cheap. Guess that flew right over your head.

No, I just recognize a dumb joke when I see one. :P

Well, not all of Cloud City is habitable; remember that a lot of space is dedicated to Tibanna processing and storage facilities.

In the Special Edition, we see other facilities relating specifically to gathering or "mining" the tibanna gas. Cloud City is probably just where everybody lives, and maybe where some of the "finishing" on the products goes on.
