Did he somehow memorize an entire language of beeps and whistles in the timeframe of ANH?

I don't think Luke knows droidspeak cause he needs a text translation of it in his x-wing.

But how do you memorize a language composed entirely of beeps and whistles? It seems nearly impossible.

Presumably it's easier for R2 to dump out text onto his screen - and allow no chance for mistranslation - rather than whistle it to Luke when possible

How did Han Solo learn a language thats nothing more than various grunts, growls, and roars? Maybe they have enough free time in SW to memorize languages like that?

Hell, people can memorize Morse Code, it's not such a leap to learn the language of the Astromech droid.

How do you memorise a language of gestures or raised dots?

The documentary "R2-D2: Beneath The Dome" indicate that Nick Giliam speaks droid.

It also says that R2 was an alcoholic, not the actor, the droid.

Take anything from that with a very large saltlick.

I refer to my post above Gandalf's.

It reveals that Hemlock simply isn't using common sense.

Well I thought that was because R2 couldn't be heard from Lukes seat in the cockpit because
1) R2 is outside in the vaccum of space
2) maybe Luke was monitoring radio transmissions to find out who was going where, while talking to R2

Watch TESB and ROTJ. In both movies, we clearly see a small video screen on the dashboard of the X-wing that translates what R2 is saying.

They could just as easily put R2 talking Basic, like C3PO does... Anyway, either whistles or "organic" speak doesn't seem a problem to a galactic civilization, the time frame is long enough for any culture to learn the millions of languages abounding... Every character, in all the movies, interacts with numerous aliens, and they understand each other (with the exception of the Ewoks, perhaps). Now, the question is, is that due to the film representation of historical events? The "it's in English so we, audience, can understand"?

I believe so, after all, to our perception, Wookie language is groans and screams, everyone seemed to understand him...

If nothing else, they can guess the general idea based on the tone and context of the beeps and whistles, as well as the various gestures accompanying them.

I don't seem to recall R2-D2 making gestures with his little utility claws while he whistled and beeped.

I have almost reached the regrettable conclusion that the Negro's great stumbling block in his stride toward freedom is not the White Citizen's Counciler or the Ku Klux Klanner, but the white moderate, who is more devoted to "order" than to justice; who constantly says: "I agree with you in the goal you seek, but I cannot agree with your methods of direct action"; who paternalistically believes he can set the timetable for another man's freedom; who lives by a mythical concept of time and who constantly advises the Negro to wait for a "more convenient season."

I bet R2 understands everything Luke says, but not the other way around. Luke probaby talks to R2 as one would talk to their pet.

If nothing else, R2 can also shake his head, and make movements similar to a nod.
