It's kinda hard to tell anything beyond the general outline of the rifle, and since that was added to in the prop making stage, it's kinda impossible to figure out what it's based off of.

Found it.

It's a heavy blaster rifle.

In reality, it's based on the MG-15. An aircraft machine gun that was later modified and put into service by ground troops.

Interesting site that sadly hasn't been updated since 2000:

Why does it have 2 scopes on it? You can't even use either one of them, because the sight line is identical...

Because they're probably not conventional scopes, more likely a FLIR or laser sight linked into the troopers helmet. The back one may be a backup display should the data link break that feeds from the front one.

Funny how they lable it as a heavy blaster rifle but at the bottom of the page they say it hasnt been given an official name as to what it is by any lucasfilm source. Does this mean its still open to interpretation? If it is, since it still looks more like a real gun then the other props, I say we could use it as a canon source for Imperial issue slug throwers which untill now have only been mentioned in EU material.

Given that we have never seen canon slug throwers, it'd be quite safe to say it was a blaster, since there's already one gun that looks like that that fires blaster bolts (Chewie's gun in the detention block).

Actually, we have seen canon slugthrowers. The Tusken Raiders used them in TPM to snipe at the podracers; they were remarkably accurate, too.

Similar but not exactly.

The one Chewie uses in the detention block is a BlasTech DLT-19 heavy blaster rifle, which was a virtually unmodified MG-34:

The DLT-19 was also seen carried by Stormtroopers and Sandtroopers.

Eh, just looking at the gun makes me think it looks a little fragile for a squad automatic weapon or the equivalent... I'm actually inclined to say it's more of a sniper rifle type?
