Domes atop ISD

Post by jegs2 »

This is my first attempt at placing a poll, so if it is hosed up, I'll consider it a "lesson available" for the future, but to the point...

The domes atop Imperator Star Destroyers (and other SD's) have been the topic of lively debate, and so far as I've been able to determine, nobody has adequately put the issue to bed. And so, I establish a poll on what y'all think those bad boys really are.

My opinion is that they are scanners, but let not that sway your vote...

They are scanners. ISD's have other equipment for communications (I think it is HttE when they describe that as being an antenna), and their shields must be internal, according to almost all sources.

The orgional ICS names them as Sensor Globes, despite what Stackpole says they are not shield generators

Stackpole is an idiot. Even his own beloved X-Wing games tell us that they are sensor globes in the time he writes his book. Maybe he never actually beat the darn games, just gave up after a couple of missions.

Considering the logic behind "shield generator domes" is from ROTJ where the dome was destroyed therefore the brigde shields are down requires the shield generator to not be protected itself, logically those domes are anyhing BUT shield generators.

They're definately sensor domes. That sattelite array between them is porbably for communications, although in the ICS, it's labeled as a taergeting array for the tractor beams.

Since ISDs were designed with real-life warships in mind, and many of them feature such radar globes on top of their superstructure, those are most likely sensor globes.

Four voted for shield generators, while one voted for comms?

Comms?! Why comms? I've never heard that before. Since when are antennas/transceivers spherical?

The following is an example of a globe on a WMEC (high-endurance Coast Guard Cutter). The globe you see is a fire-control radar for target aquisition and targeting for the ship's main gun. That supports the scanner globe theory (granted that CG ships have no shields, much less shield generators):

They are clearly not shield generators. Anyone who voted for Shield Generators needs to learn more about the subject.

I think they started calling it that so people would think ISDs are pussy. :x They made up that flaw so people could actualy kill them in video games. Oh and who ever made rogue squadron 2 was a fool for making the reactor a sheild too.

The Domes atop the ISD are sheild generators if u watch ep 6 you see an A-wing blow one up in order to attack the ISD with out sheilds.

The mellenium Falcon clings on to the ISD, the ISD sensors are used for locating ships & plantes. But the sensors locate stuff away from them not themselves.

The shield failure is not a result of the destruction of the dome!
The shield must first fail before you can actually hit the domes.
The A-Wing delivered the final shots which made the shields fail, I believe these even were concussion missiles, and the shots which went through the failing shield destroyed the domes.
And your avatar is disturbing.

Fucken motherfucken fucken fucken motherfucker son of bitch hell I accidentally voted for shields!

Doesn't matter- truth is not a democracy- it is obvious that they are sensor globes.

Also, the ICS doesn't call them the tractor beam targetting array- thats reserved for the array IN BETWEEN them.

How DARE you masquerade as Grand Admiral Thrawn with that avatar and spout out such crap. Haven't you realized that the A-Wings destroyed only one of the globes? Haven't you realized that the shields must already be down for the A-Wings to destroy one of them? Haven't you realized that the A-Wings were incapable of actually damaging the Executor, except once the shields were down?
