Battle of Yavin force sub

Post by Kuja »

All of Red Squadron's X-wings are replaced by XJs, and all other Rebel fighters are eliminated.

What changes?

As there are no TIEs (you said all fighters) more of the fighters get to make more runs, meaning Luke never gets his turn at it, so no one hits it, so Yavin 4 goes boom.

Hard to say. Are there any hard numbers on just how vastly improved the XJ model is over the ANH X-Wing?

I meant no other Rebel fighters. Post edited for clarification.

Well, speed and maneuverability are largely irrelevent inside the trench. Even with imporved shields, TIEs will still down them in 3-4 hits. And you can't out-do Vader either.

Best bet is that a few more TIEs die, a few more X-Wings live, and the battle goes roughly the same otherwise.

That's what I'd like to found out.

By about that time they and E wings (E wings being the majority) make up most of the standard starfighter corps, with B wings and K wings fulfilling the bomber roles. Both the E wing and X wing models have been upgraded over time (By about the JAT latest model X wings were suppossed to be as fast as Endor model A wings) and are now faster then anything else fielded in the last war, with the possible exception of TIE Defenders. XJs carry 9 torps, XJ3s carry 12, and both have Heavy Laser cannons (the 2 KT dealies on slave 1 equivlents). They have improved shields, with the XJ3 actually having a set of backup shields. I would suspect both have improved ECM, though I can't prove that. They are slightly longer, have a bit of a different design to the engines, and have less cargo space.

In short, they are faster, tougher, more manuverable, and pack more punch.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think some upgraded X-wings were on par with TIE Interceptors in maneuverability, as well as sporting enhanced shields and weapons. Then the XJ version improved the fighter even more.

These TIEs are completely outclassed in maneuverability and shielding, so Rebel survivability is going to be much higher. We should see Vader's forces are wiped out much more easily than expected, so Tarkin may choose to release more fighters to ensure the death of the Rebel pilots, but likely he'll withhold them to prevent any further Imperial losses.

From here, things get fuzzy, as everything gets mixed up as the battle flows differently and different decisions are made. As long as Luke makes his torpedo run in time, the Rebellion should win. However, a different set of pilots may lose their lives, and others may survive (Assuming the Luke-Biggs-Wedge flight group makes a run, Vader may not be as careless when targetting Wedge after seeing the performance of the fighters he's going against, and actually finish him off, while the heavier shielding could keep Biggs alive long enough after Wedge is gone for Luke to gets his torpedoes off, before Han comes). Also, Vader's wingmen may be targetted and destroyed after the rest of the TIEs are gone, preventing Vader from effectively picking off fighters making the trench run.
Later...

There have been no less then 6 versions of the X wing fighter. The X wing T - 65 B, famous in the movies, the X wing T-65 C, which came out in the thrawn era and was on par with a TIE Interceptor and packed 8 torps, an unclassified X wing which came out in the JAT era and was as fast as an A wing and could be modified to be flown without an astromech, the X wing AC4 which came out atr the end of the civil war and served until the first XJ's came out (no real information on them, just mentioned in Dark Tide), the Original XJ Xwing which came out about a year before Vector Prime and was deployed in a manner similar to the TIE Interceptor was for the Empire and packing more speed, heavy laser cannons, and 9 torps, and finally the XJ3 model X wing which came out around Star By Star, carrying 12 torps, double shields, heavy lasers, and was even faster and more manuverable.

If you look, the importance of starfighters carrying heavy torpedos is clearly evident in NR strategy, as is shown by tactics and by the type and power of ships they build.

Any advantage in torpedo payload is irrelevant, the Rebels where very short of them and each fighter only got two. I'd say the Death Stars fighters would rip them apart, same as before, the Rebel pilots are nothing special and there are now far fewer of them.

You forgot the T-65R - the recon version of the X-wing, nicknamed the "Snoopscoot".

Doh. Though to be fair, it lacks weapons and my files are only on war vessels.

Don't know about the coding, but it wouldn't be Freitech. The designers left, but design patents remain with the company.

What about the class of X-Wing being designed during the New Rebellion? What was their designation and advantage?
