For an article using Star Wars in its title, it didn't say much about SW or what this Haroun guy thinks about it. As far as I can tell, his only point against SW is that "directors in Morocco and Tunisia, became just assistants to Hollywood." Pretty vague.

How could Star Wars have a bad effect on people's image of Africa if we don't even know the scenes were shot in Africa?

That part was about how other movies portrayed African stereotypes.

Well, if that wasn't the point, I don't even know what the point of the article was regarding SW.

Welcome to name dropping 101. Hi, Im Mel Nobody from Catshit Africa. Normally no one on the whole planet gives two fucks about Africa, except to complain when the occassional genocidal war stacks the bodies so high as to obscure the view of British tourists who came to watch the Lions fuck. So , with that out of the way one sure fire way to get my myopic bassackward views heard is to mention the film and film maker of one of the 20th centurys most popular and highest grossing film series. No, at no time will I actually insult Mr. Lucas, as hes has badassed attorneys on his side , while all I have is this moldy bread, and I dont think he's licensed to practice law in America, but I will use Star Wars and Mr Lucas as an opening to begin my oblique slam of the Hollywood strangle hold over the movie production industry, and its protrayal of Africans.
Thanks for coming to class, next week, we'll be discussing lible laws and how to skirt the edges of them in order to 'get back at the white devil'.

WTF does that mean? He claimed that he had problems with the way African actors were portrayed in movies. Since SW hardly used any African actors, why is this a problem with the SW films?
I don't even see what his complaints are about.

So Tatooine is really Africa on Earth? And here I thought in SW, it was another planet.
Dumbass.

Well, Lucas could have used Southwestern American, Mexican or even Australian locations for Tatooine....

Is this guy related to
Dave Brin in any way?

"They shoot us like animals"
That's a hilarious statement.

So I take it shooting "The Most Dangerous Game" remake there isn't a good idea?

This is the dumbest thing I've ever read criticizing SW, and with David Brin in the world that says a lot.

I don't get it. There's no criticism. Just mindless talk.

I get it now...
Once you get a semi hit film in Botswana you too can critique a bigger hit and saying it's exploiting your people
Jesus, some people just yabber.

His point of view is interesting, but I think completely false.
"They came there and made their movies - and these guys stopped making movies."
I do not think those directors ("these guys" in the quote) were forced to stop movie making. If they chose the easier path it would not be the fault (or responsibility) of the path, would it?

I don't get it what image are we supposed to have of Afrca? All I can see is a bunch of starving people with AIDS. Correct me if Im wrong but isnt most of Africa like that.

I never even recall negative things happening to black people in any of the movies save the one black Rebel X-Wing pilot in the Battle of Endor.

"Africa is just a location for Star Wars," Haroun told the BBC World Service's Africa Live! programme.
Yeah, just like New Zealand was "just a location" for Lord of the Rings. Do you see them complaining? What the hell do you want, a pat on the back, american money, and aids medication every 3 months for the next 10 years? Or maybe episode 3 can have subtitled: TATOOINE-BUT NOT REALLY TATOOINE. AFRICA, MOTHER OF ALL FUCKING CONTINENTS. SPACE PEOPLE LIVE HERE. GIVE US YOUR MONEY.
"Friends of mine, directors in Morocco and Tunisia, became just assistants to Hollywood.
What the fuck do you want? A job as director and a plane ticket back to america? Go back and start building the set because that's what they're paying you for. Gratification isn't in the job description. And newsflash: despite what they taught you in african school, the streets in America aren't paved with gold.
Africa has been shot by others, so the image of Africa was wrong
I don't know what the hell that means.
Newsworthy my ass. Here comes the BBC! your cock liberal halfminded news source.

New Zealand is making mad bank off of LOTR. Dumbasses should try something like that.
