how does it affect a gas giant?

Official word says it doesn't. HOWEVER 1E38 joules would be enough to take one out, it would just expand at a REALLY slow rate. It would take a few hours, slow down the DS from reaching Yavin, and then require another day to charge up to blow Yavin to hell. More information, go here
