What is wrong with WEG??

Post by Straha »

Well, what did WEG screw up, mangle, haze up, and destroy in it's view of star wars?? Note I am a dedicated WEG RPG GM and hate the new WOTC game.

As a game, WEG tends to rock. However, they thorough ass-fucked continuity and Canon. With a sledgehammer. Turned sideways.

What's wrong with WEG? No much , they just apparently never bothered to watch the Star Wars movies before they went to work. And boy does it ever show.

For example, WEG tends to set their fluff by completely arbitrary means. They simple make shit up. The number of guns on an ISD? Did they consult the models or movie footage? No, they just made them up. The length of the Executor? They made it up (or used one incorrect source to the exclusion of all else).

The problem with WEG is that their research is shit. As an RPG company they're just fine, but as a source for official information... well, they get lucky sometimes.

Another problem is that they don't give any true thought to weapons power. They create small ships that carry HTLs, and they give the Eclipse class less then firepower of their IDS 2 (minus the SL of course)

Besides, D20 is far superior to D6

Almost all of their statistics on ships and technology is extremely weak. I loved the old CCG, but the new TCG is just kind of boring. There is no depth, whatsoever to it. Everyone was slamming the CCG because it took so long to play, but that allowed the strategies to develop. The TCG is decided merely by pulling the right cards and rolling the dice well. It's over so quickly I can't even get into a game.

There's never enough people to actually play the Star Wars card games with. Some friends and I used to play Magic all the time, but we could never really get the Star Wars thing going. Also to the point, I have never done pen and paper RPG'ing, but the rabid chat simmers and board simmers I believe based most of thier rules on WEG and specs also. They did make changes here and there. I have seen some WEG material and personally just do not understand what they were smokeing.

The problem with WEG is that they made many incorrect ship sizes, mislabeled the sensors of an ISD, and LA made everyone follow those mistakes. They also were bad researchers, and did innacurate deckplans.

Forgive my WEG bias for a moment...

One of the few things I prefered WEG over WOTC for was the general effort put into their books. WOTC seems to be only interested in making source books that are purely stats, photos, and expencive ($30-$40 for each of the 4-5 main rulebooks?! Does every page have to be high-quality paper and in full colour?!). It's almost like they don't fully care.

The backround art for every page is also a personal irritation of mine.

WOTC books also seem kinda bare inside compared to WEG, like they didn't even bother to add anything to spice them up. WEG often had little stories, deck plans, charts, original artwork (by several different artists) and colourful text descriptions. Their books seemed to be somewhat cheeper, too.

WOTC appears to have the attitude "This shit has already been done. Let's just mush all the series together and release them as "Eras" with different rules. No, don't do any deckplans or skematics: wait until the fans start bitching after a year or so, then consider doing them. Now get those production stills/arts to the printers."

Yeah, WEG had crummy research, but at least they put some effort into their books so you can enjoy them.

Or rather 'don't put in any deckplans or schematics then we can release them in a rule supplement and charge another fistful for it.
