I was thinking bout The Hand of Thrawn books, and remembered that tyhe New Republic couln't stop systems leaving. Yet in AotC The clone wars starts, in part, due to systems wanting to leave the rpublic?
Is the New Republic more idealistic than the old? Why would the old rebuplic go to war if they had no basis for it in their constition?
Ideas?

The New Republic probably is far more idealistic than the Old Republic was in its state of decay. They probably would not go to war to force a system to remain a member.

It's likely that the shapers of the New Republic learned some lessons from history. They've got plenty of internal strife already without forcing worlds to be members; the last thing they need is another civil war.

I think it's more a case of the NR being too weak to be able to stop systems determined to leave. The NR would no doubt be cast in a very bad light if they tried to stop a system that wanted to leave.

The Clone Wars were triggered by the rising aggression of the Seperatists. Not by the point of systems withdrawing from the Republic. They knew Ansion was trying to sucede, but they were only going about it by non aggressive, diplomatic means. Same holds true with the New Republic. Neither government is going to force any system to remain a part of them. Only the Empire would openly keep a system in check.

Actually, in the Timothy Zahn short-story for SW Insider (3 parter, huzzah!), the representitive for Chancellor Palpatine forces Spaarti Creations into siding with the Republic (although he is actually a agent for Sidious, the order is still from the Old Republic). The following dialouge transpires:

"It's quite simple," Doriana (rep. from the Republic) said, sitting down and gazing calmly up at the man towering over him. "As you say Spaarti Creations is one of a kind. Since we can't duplicate it, we'll have to use it as it is."

Binalie's (owner of Spaarti Creations) expression didn't even twitch. Clearly, he'd guessed where the whole visit was going. "Impossible," he said. "This is the single viable buisness of an entire sub-minority species - the Cransoc (insect-like employers of Spaarti Creations) - and as such comes under Senate Directive 422. Governmental interference with its operation is strictly and expressively forbidden."

"Desperate times call for deperate measures," Doriana countered, pulling out a data card from inside his pocket. "Senate Directive 3591 authorizing Supreme Chancellor Palpatine unlimited authority to comandeer any resource or group of resources he feels neccesary for a swift conclusion of hostilities." - P. 55

So while the Old Republic tried to keep itself non-aggresive during its pre-war years, once the Clone Wars had begun, it did anything it could to get it hands on the neccesary resources.

It's probably most of all because the New Republic wouldn't risk such a large conflict to happen again. Especially now that they have been attacked by the Vong.
