Make your own SD

You have been ordered by the Emperor to make a new class of general purpose Star Destroyer. You have unlimited resources and five years to design the thing, plus you get to keep the first one for yourself as you are an admiral. How would you make yours?

I would make it 20 miles long, wit an axial superlaser, hundreds of HTLs all over the hull, give it fighter bays for 1000 tie defenres and the fighters themselves, 20 of the heaviest ion drive engines money can buy, 5 top-of- the-line super-computers, a legion of stormies with supporting armor, a full-fledged hospital, a WD furnace and approiate factories, and a small resort for myself. Then I defect to the Rebellion with the ship and use it against the Empire.

Uh, exactly who do you think would be crewing your ship? Perhaps, some loyal Imperial crew members. Hard to get them to defect with you.

gaining control of ISD in four easy steps


1. Insert massive computer control sysems to run the ship until the rebels can crew it

2. use massive control system to take over systems and seal yourself in the control room

3. open all airlocks and hangers

4. jump to hyperspace

You have unlimited resources, so you can hand pick the crew, however ardious that may be. Or you could use droids and very few crew.

Stupid assignment that can be nothing but the twentieth design wankfest thread. With stagnant technology and vast industrial resources the technology push method of design doesn't work. You need a requirement pull, in which you request a piece of equipment, be it a ship tank or canteen, to meet an operational requirement. The equipment is then designed to meet that requirement.

The only way to develop even halfway reasonable starship concepts is to have a specific design goal -- otherwise, unlimited budget = "how much of an ubership can I dream up?"

Exactly my point. Course, that kind of thinking along with bad intelligence got us the F-15 :D

Though, you know, Killing Time or better yet, Meatfucker would also make an impression on enemies. Would you pick a fight with a navy that would name one of its warships the Meatfucker?

Then what about Executor Star Destroyer or Ecplipse Star Destroyer? Also destroyers? Damn I'd love to see a Battleship!

General-purpose Star Destroyer:

1200 meters long.

Four heavy turbolaser batteries, one in each quadrant (dorsal-port, dorsal-starboard, ventral-port, ventral-starboard). That way, at least two turrets can fire in any direction at any given time.

Quad-redundant shields. Meaning you have to take down the shields four times before they drop.

A nice mixture of light weaponry and medium weaponry. I like the axial defense MTL's, though I'd put them on both sides of the ship.

Double-up the superstructure on the ventral surface of the ship (though without the command tower).

Heavy ion cannon turrets on the port and starboard trenches.

Six squadrons of fighters (I like that number). Keep the ground assault troops, though scratch the garrisons... too mission-specific. I'd have dedicated carriers for that sort of thing, meant to follow-up the initial assault.

There you go. A general-purpose Star Destroyer that makes sense, not this "Make it a million miles long!" wankfest.

I'll take an executor, take out the ground forces, add more tie racks hanging over under, so we can increase the number to a more reasonble one and add a few gravity well generators, but keep everything else basicly the same.

Length: unknown. Probably a little longer than 1.2km (in repsonse to the first design enhancement), but nothing too extrenous. No larger than 2km, I'd suspect.

1.) Bury the bridge tower/other command module under the armor. We don't need a nice big fat "kill me!" sign on our destroyers every time the shields drop.

2.) Create an retractable armored "door" around the hangar bay, so that it can close itself up in the case of shield failure.

3.) Have an easily modifiable hangar bay, so that you can add/remove space vessels and ground vehicles as neccesary. Although I'd probably keep the ground compliment already availible, unless there is an unusually large ground battle happening somewhere.

4.) Start stackin' them TIE racks! I'd bet you could fit some odd 144 squandrons (1728) of TIEs in those hangars, instead of the usual - and quite pitiful - 6 squadrons (72).

5.) With the extra TIEs, point-defence laser cannons won't be as neccesary. That makes more space for heavier turbolaser cannons. Less LTLs, more MTLs. As for HTLs, the 8-barreled ones on the ISD-II would be adequate. More capship killer torpedo tubes as well; they seem to be better at delivering energy faster, thus overloading shields.

6.) Multiple shield back-ups for each quandrant of shied coverage, like on Mon Cal Cruisers. So if an enemy's guns happen to blast through the first section, well, that's only the begging.

The ISD as it stands is not a bad General purpose ship, the trouble is that General purpose translates into English as "kinda sucks at any given task".

That should be the goal, here. Not a dedicated battleship, not a dedicated ground assault boat, not a dedicated system patrol vessel, not a dedicated command ship, not a dedicated carrier... but mixtures of all of them, rolled into one.

Frankly, any design much larger than the standard ISD is extreme overkill. This is a GENERAL PURPOSE vessel, people, not a terror weapon or command ship. The idea is that you want to be able to build a LOT of these, not just one or two.

The Executor-class is a command ship. Palpatine and Lord Vader and General Solo all referenced it in such a manner that also benefits as coinciding with its actual role.

The Eclipse was regarded as a "Super Star Destroyer" which, as we've seen, is a colloquialism for larger-than ISD vessels in a mothership role.

It is similarly, a command ship due to its Executor cousin's canon designation and its role as demonstrated.
