What did Lucas take from the EU and put in the Prequels?

Post by His Divine Shadow »

Let's make a list shall we?

1. Coruscant
2. Jabba being alive at that time(no age specified in the OT, but mentioned in the EU)
3. The Hutts and their crime organization is taken from the EU
4. The Sith theme of "One master, one apprentice" is shown
5. The way Palpatine went about destroying the Old Republic is also shown in the manner depicted in the EU

The novelisations have a LOT of shit in them that is, of course, taken from the scripts of the time. One master, one apprentice would be EU. I know for sure, the name, not the concept of the planet, Coruscant is EU. At the beginning of ANHs novelisation it talks about Palpatine's rise, the corruption of the Old Republic, etc etc. I'd have to see a big long list of what could be taken from EU then re read the novels and listen to the radio dramas some more before I could really pick out more stuff.

Of course a lot of that stuff could have been part of Lucas's vision anyway (eg Palpatine's rise), with or without the EU.

YT-1300 freighters in the Clone era

Clones based on Fett -- old EU maintained that Fett's armor was based on the predecessors to stormtroopers called "shocktroopers"

So? Thats why the EU is official is it not?
This is not an EU debate thread either.
Just a simple listing of the sources or incidents or characters that are from the EU.

I was simply saying that it may be unfair to say that Lucas 'took' all these elements from the EU to include in movies.

I can understand character listings and such but something like:

Who's to say George didn't always assume that YT-1300s were from the clone era? After all, it is "a piece of junk".

I don't see how it is "unfair", you mean as in GL did not come up with it himself or so?
It doesn't matter who came up with it, only thing that matters is wheter it came from the EU or not, if GL put it in the EU, it only gives the EU more reliability than before, just shows he's working closer with it than thought.

Unfair was the wrong choice of words.

Stop worrying, HDS, I'm not trying to attack the EU. For the third time, all I'm saying is that some of this may well have already been in Lucas's mind before it was written about in the EU. Therefore it may not be a situation of Lucas thinking 'wow, that's a good idea. I'll put it in my movie' just Lucas thinking 'wow, that's odd: they got my idea right'.

I just wanted to remind people of that, not start an argument.

I am worrying, I wasn't anymore when you first said it, but when I read that last thing I got worried again since it's a snide comment against the EU, you assume Lucas would be thinking it's an oddity that they got it right in the first place and not the other way around.

Actually, wasn't the original concept that Fett was some form of super trooper (funny movie btw). Maybe that's what your saying actually. I'll have to dig up that magic myth book I have.

As far as YT1300s I'm surprised we're not seeing them in the prequels.

2. Jabba being alive at that time(no age specified in the OT, but mentioned in the EU)

I don't think you can chalk this one up to Eu. We don't know how old Jabba was in RotJ, but it wasn't *that* long. certainly, HJabba would have been alive, unless his species has a avery fast growing cycle.

4. The Sith theme of "One master, one apprentice" is shown
5. The way Palpatine went about destroying the Old Republic is also shown in the manner depicted in the EU

Except I think both these were not precisely depicted in the EU and both were taken from rumors or interviews with george.

1) Aalya Secura
2) Double bladed lightsabre
3) name "Coruscant"
4) Sentinal class landing vessel
5) Dash Rendar's ship
6) ASP droids
7) thrantas
8) Yuzzem (I think, the illustrated guide to the star wars universe came out before the SE, right?)
9) Swoops

Think that's it, but the ANH SE is filled with stuff.

Actually Coruscant wasn't EU, it was a GL concept. Ralph McQuarrie drew pictures of it in the 70's but GL couldn't afford to put them in SW at that time. Although I'm not sure if the name Coruscant is EU, but the concept of a city-planet is all GL. Look at the Illustrated Star Wars Universe.

Return of the Jedi novelisation Star Wars trilogy
p 352 paperback
Jabba smiled grimly. 'Your mind powers will not work on me boy, I am not affected by your human thought pattern.' Then as an after thought 'I was killing your kind when being a Jedi meant soemthing.'

Hmmmm...What did GL take from the EU and put in his prequels...The general suckiness of the EU has translated rather well in the prequels, PARTICULARLY in TPM. Just my thoughts.

Yes, but the orginial name was New Abbadon, which sort of exists in EU, because Palpatine was slowly moving the Goverment there after Hoth. Coruscant is a totally EU name though.

NO BEAN. Absolutely not. Zahn is the ONLY reason I don't consider the EU total shit. Zahn made me start loving Star Wars again after years of a haitus. It was the flood of shit like Crystal Star and Jedi Academy trilogy that made me turn my nose up to the EU and am proud to say I haven't read a book since.

I am a disciple of Zahn...and don't you forget it!! :D
