Why was the original Max Rebo Band music replaced by new (and much worse) music in the Special Edition???

I just wondered.

The original song was called "Lapti Nek", we played it in High School band. Why they 86'd it in the SE, I do not know, or condone. It really was a cool song, groovy bass line. :)

They aren't. The Bith band in ANH were the Modal Nodes. Max Rebo Band was the band in ROTJ. EU said that the Modal Nodes played in Jabba's palace at one point in time, I believe.

Yeah. I have Lapti Nek on MP3. Why did they replace it with the atrocity that is "Jedi Rocks"??

I remember in the intro to RotJ SE Lucas comments he thought i would be funny to have a musical number. I however think George Lucas needs slapped in the face with a trout.

Putting Jedi Rocks in was more than just replacing a good old song; it is, by far, the most embarassingly stupid moment in all of SW now, and that's saying a lot for a movie that doesn't have Jar Jar.

Lucas thought that it should be more kid frendly. Like the Ewoks were'nt enough.

You can be kid-friendly without making your movies into a fucking embarassment.

How is "Jedi Rocks" and "Lapti Nek" more or less kid-friendly than each other?? :?

Because it had a furry CG character singing.

I got news for Lucas. I was a kid when RotJ came out. It was fine as it was. Now it just looks dumb.

But why, oh why, did they have to change that funky music while they were at it??

What was a blow to the testicles for me, was that John Williams replaced his own work, and seemed satisfied!
Horrible! :x

This will surely be remembered as an "I Can't Believe They Did That!" moment.....

I also have "Lapti Nek" on MP3.

Personally, what I really love is the music that's being played on the sail barge (which is also heard in the palace at the end of the Boush scene). I especially love the section that plays when the barge passes overhead.

Are there any copies of that song floating around?

Actually, I've found the official explanation for the replacement of "Lapti Nek" with the much inferior "Jedi Rocks" here.
Starwars.com wrote:When Return of the Jedi was re-released as a Special Edition in 1997, the "Lapti Nek" number was replaced with a less dated piece of music, called "Jedi Rocks" in production.
But who cares if Lapti Nek is dated?? The truth remain -
Lapti Nek rocks... Jedi Rocks sucks.

At least I hope they don't take the 1980 "Flash Gordon" movie and replace the Queen soundtrack with a Slipknot soundtrack in order to make it "less dated." To me, music doesn't get worse by being dated. It either makes it classic, or gives it Kitsch ValueTM.

Here's yet another mystery:

The site linked to before says that the following are the lyrics of "Lapti Nek":
Ab queck zenick fesi
Jup col im in na hiz jal, ooh.
Wa toc peg qui dos gee pif, aah.
Joc jarraz bas deg zorze zot.
Jer wih tuster mo vey
qui neb be og ezen on
wok lapti nek seb not van
goc jarraz bas deg zorze zot.

Lapti nek, rat a ran wim joct co jappi qaff,
lapti nek, kiv ba ha top wep jex pi va bep,
lapti nek rat a ran wim joct co jeppi quaff.
What language is this?? Basic? Huttish?? Or the native language of Sy Snootles?? (the vocalist of the Max Rebo Band, who belongs to the Pa'lowick species.)

This could be interesting to know.
