Was reading an article on CNN.com. Was curious if maybe either of these forces could help explain the as of yet unexplained rings and deceleration of matter.

No, they were there because ILM thought they look cool. There is no way George Lucas could have learned of the recent discoveries on dark matter way back in 1977.

I am not being stupid. I am just suggesting that since George Lucas could not have known about darkmatter in 1977 he did not intend those effects as such. Since I could not find any other reasons for them I thought they were done purely because they look cool. I am sorry if I offended any star wars fans, I was just trying to give a logical explanation. Forgive me if I am wrong.

What matters is what we see on screen. If we were to encounter a real scientifically observable phenomenon that would explain the presence of those rings, whether the phenomena had been observed in 1977 is totally irrelevant.

It's the correct explanation, however you should know that analyzing films like we do SD.net does not allow room for one to simply say they're their because they look cool.

What matters is what we see on screen. If we were to encounter a real scientifically observable phenomenon that would explain the presence of those rings, whether the phenomena had been observed in 1977 is totally irrelevant.

I only skimmed the article, but I don't see how the rings would be related to dark matter.

Anyway, the rings weren't added until the Special Edition, which came out much more recently.

Isn't dark matter that stuff that's theorised to exist in deep space and the spaces between galaxies?

Exactly what on Earth would that have any connection whatsoever to the rings in the Alderaan explosion?

It doesn't even remotely make any sense.

This is more of a wild guess than anything else, but perhaps the relation between dark matter/energy and the Alderaan rings is suppose to do with how dark matter causes particles to clump together, and the amount of energy (or perhaps how it is delivered) the superlaser beam hits the planet which causes some kind of reaction with the dark matter?

Of cause, that's just a wild strike at the dark, and I ought to get some shut-eyes...

Well, where I'm going with this is that everyone is wondering why the rings or debris "decelerate" in the vaccuum of space. Dark Matter/Energy seems to have some strang effects on gravitional properties, so I was wondering if that explains the deceleration, not the rings themselves.

The rings could easily be explained away as Deep underground hypermatter reactors exploding (The deathstar, which has a large hypermatter reactor at its core destroys in the same way).
