What are the ranks within the Jedi Order, if any?

There are very few ranks, and they are highly general and fluidic.

1. Youngling, a title for students who have not yet taken a master.

2. Padawan, a title for students who have taken a master, and who are training individually with that being.

3. Jedi Knight, awarded once the trials are completed. Jedi Knights make up the majority of the Jedi within the Order, and are the ones most readily assigned to missions. Jedi Knights are known as "Master Jedi's" by non-Jedi, when they are in formal talks.

4. Jedi Master, awarded once the Jedi Knight has trained an apprentice into Jedi Knighthood.

5. Jedi Council Member, a special title open to either Knights or Masters. The only requirement is that they must serve on the Jedi Council.

Its been bugging me for a while but is or was Obi Wan ever promoted to the title of Jedi Master. For Anakin never really became a Knight as of right now. Who knows what happens in Episode 3 other than Palpatine showing his true dark self and Anakin becoming Vader.

Obi Wan was known to Luke and some others as Jedi Master but does anyone have any thing they can discuss about Obi Wan being a Jedi Master in official ranking?

Obi-Wan was never promoted to Jedi Master. When did Luke call him a Jedi Master?

Lets wait until the episode 3 comes out

Wouldn't Obi-Wan be a Jedi Master by default, since Anakin kept referring to him as, well, master?

3 possibilities:

1. A Padawan always calls their instructor "Master", regardless of the instructor's actual rank. Possible, and sensible.

2. Between TPM and AOTC, Kenobi was promoted from Jedi Knight to Jedi Master. Possible, as a lot can happen in 10 years, and we don't really know how long it takes to go from Knight to Master, or if there's even a minimum time period in the Order.

3. To take on a Padawan, you have to have the Rank of Master, so they had to bump Kenobi straight from Knight to Master in order for him to take on Annakin as a Padawan. Possible, but it would have had to have happened immediately after or right before the ending scene of TPM, and only if Annakin had not yet been officially accepted as a Padawan for Kenobi. Note, however, that Yoda originally denied Kenobi's request, and only gave in after he'd already told Kenobi the Council had given him the rank of Knight, so it's possible that after Yoda gave in to Kenobi's request they decided to bump him up in rank as well.

Without more canon or official information, I'm not sure we will really know which is the correct interpretation...

Another possibilty: Obi-wan was promoted to the rank of Jedi Master. After Anakin's fall, Obi-wan may have been stripped of the rank of master.

Option #1 seems the most sensible. What else would the Padawans refer to their trainers as?

Padawans always refer to their masters as "master," even if their master happens to be only a Jedi Knight. Also, civilians refer to Jedi Knights as "master Jedi," if they are in a formal setting.

Is it just me, but on that link if you click EU for Mace, the third paragraph says the following;
StarWars.com wrote:Among Mace's numerous apprentices was the Chalactan Jedi Depa Billaba. Under his skilled tutelage, Billaba became a remarkable Jedi, ascending to rank of Master herself and earning a place on the Jedi Council beside her former Master. Another of his Padawans was Echuu Shen-Jon, a Jedi who would ultimately survive the dark times.
Does this mean that mean that this Jedi survived the purges? Is this an issolated case? WTF?

The EU has a few other Jedi surviving the purges, including Vima Sunrider in Dark Empire (which puts her even older than Yoda, since she was a teenage Padawan at the end of the Sith Wars).

However, in the sense that the Order was destroyed as an organized body, and Luke seen as the only hope of reconstituting it, then individual Jedi could survive while still having Luke be the "last" of the Jedi.

Most of the Jedi that survived did so through a couple of means: they renounced their old teachings, or avoided using them for fear of calling attention to themselves, they fled to either the Unknown Regions or to small and out of the way planets in order to avoid scrutiny, they joined the Empire, or they just lived quietly. In any of these cases, their knowledge could not live on because they could not train apprentices during these times. Rahn, from Jedi Knight, also escaped only to be killed by the Dark Jedi Jerek.

Echuu Shen-Jon appears in the game Star Wars: Galactic Battlegrounds for the PC. He ends up dying in a fight with Darth Vader (sorry to kill any hopes you might've had).

Vima

If I recall correctly, the Vima who appears in Dark Empire is actually Vima Di Boda, a grandchild or descendant of Vima Sunrider. She's only Human, after all; I imagine that there's a practical limit to how long humans can survive, even awakened to the Force.

Crap...

I didn't remember her last name from Dark Empire, and I just read the Redemption comic the other day, so Sunrider was fresh in my mind...
