What if....... Star Wars was an anime ?
What if.. Lucas, being inspired by that Japanese movie (forgot its name), decided to do an anime ? No, I'm not trying to downgrade SW,definitely not, BUT, just what if SW was an anime ?
DIscuss.
I'd think the scene would be more violent, the ligthsabre duels move action-packed (but less accurate), the chestlines sizes bgger, etc.

It's a series of manga comics. You can get them at Amazon.com, I'm sure.

I used to absolutely HATE anime. However, if you have ever read the manga comics, holy shit, do they rock. They beat the crap out of the original Marvel comic adaptations. In fact, in the old Marvel adaptations Lando mentions using concussion missiles, which is in the novel. Manga however takes thier cues from the movies. I have the very last copy of Return of the Jedi manga, four of four, and it follows it almost exactly. I think they had to change the dialogue positions a few times.I have both TPM mangas and they are just simply dazzling. One thing though, they have to flip the pictures sometimes, obviously because we read left to right, Japanese or asian culture reads right to left. You'll see scenes flipped around sometimes. Like Ackbar looking out the viewport of Home One he'll be looking left instead of right. Other than that it is bad ass. If it originally started as anime, I couldn't say. It wouldn't be the same, because in art like that, I find you can easily draw something exactly the way you want it. However, in filmmaking (Star Wars' case in point they had to make thier special effects tricks) you have certain things to work with. Even now with computers they still have to work with certain things. So, I don't think it would have turned out the way it did.

The Star Wars Manga (Japanese comic) series were made directly from the films, and are not based on an anime series. Trust me, there is no word on an anime SW, though personally, I'd like to see one done on the Thrawn trilogy or Dark Empire. Pulled of properly, they could be quite impressive.
I tell ya, there's alot of good anime out there; the problem is that only in the last ten years has anything besides sleavy porn and cheap horror/sci-fi been available in North America (what with this kind of society, those two genres are the only ones out of any media that are sure to sell). The real stuff is so above and beyond these crappy american shows and 'films'.

If SW was anime then:
Coruscant would have a number after its name.
AT-ATs would have been bipedal and engaged in massive HtH battles with the Rebel "giant robos" that mysteriously appeared.
Every pilot would have a chance to get off a serious monologue before dying in combat.
X-Wings would have a "giant robo" mode.
Stormtroopers would look cooler (somehow).
Ewoks would have been huge nasty tentacle beasts.
Following on from above, the garbage compactor scene would have been VERY different.

I saw the Star Wars manga at my local library once. I thought it was cool and tried to find my sister to show it to her. She's a fan of both Trek and Wars, so I thought she would find it amusing. I couldn't find her. My failure was mildly irritating, but I didn't mind much.
I prepared Explosive Runes today.

weird idea
for one thing the lightsabre duels would be insane, and pretty entertaining. But we'd have to suspend reality so that when Luke gets his hand sliced off 10000 gallons of blood would come out.
On a similar note, has anyone noticed that even early in Dragonball Z and Dragonball there were people destroying planets/moons? I came up with a few weird theories regarding that nobody wants me to explain in great detail but its hard to not be amazed at fighters who can generate many kiltons of energy on their own.

It's best to ignore the god-awful Dragonball series for anime with a little more substance.Darth Fanboy wrote:for one thing the lightsabre duels would be insane, and pretty entertaining. Besides those three you mentioned, I also like Neon Genesis Evangelion and Martian Successor Nadesico a lot... but that's just me, LOL.Mr Bean wrote:Yes you seem to be watching the WRONG Animes, Some are better than others

So that's two good series, and an okayish adaptation of a really good comic...Mr Bean wrote:Yes you seem to be watching the WRONG Animes, Some are better than others

And Mononoke is better than all of them.
Anyway, you should really be reading Lone Wolf and Cub. Because it does utterly shame any comic written since, and there is no better source of comic book fighting.

I've always wondered what anyone saw in that series. Horrible artwork, no plot. Gah.Damaramu wrote: It's best to ignore the god-awful Dragonball series for anime with a little more substance.
Serious anime: The Record of Lodoss War
Comedic: The Slayers (all the series)
A little bit of both: Cowboy Bebop (I've even written a fic of the crew in GFFA)
Classic: Devil Hunter Yohko
Re: weird idea
There is a plot. Of sorts.Kelly Antilles wrote:I've always wondered what anyone saw in that series. Horrible artwork, no plot. Gah.Damaramu wrote: It's best to ignore the god-awful Dragonball series for anime with a little more substance.
It starts with Journey to the West (old chinese legend/fairytale), and proceeds via several other knockoffs into 'intoduce villain, defeat heroes, heroes 'power up', defeat villain, introduce new villain'.
The art of the original comics isn't bad, and some of the gags are alright (albeit aimed at a youngish audience), but Toriyama has no imagination for stories. (or character designs, witness Gok.. sorry Crono)

I love Dragon Ball Z. That's the whole reason I actually have started liking Anime, and letting it influence my works. It's quirky, its character designs are obviously not comparable to higher end animes or comic books, however it works for the series, and to me strengthens the seriousness of the whole show. Gundam Wing is another one I love. 08th was really good. Outlaw Star is just waaaaay the fuck out there in the awesome scale, and Cowboy Beebop. Cya round space cowboy.
