Wondering about DS2 attack
I'm just back from a back to back to back showing of the original trilogy here at school (yay!), and I have a question, although I'm sure it's been discussed elsewhere.
Does anyone know, at the Battle of Endor, what the unfinished side of the DS2 (never shown on screen) looked like? Shouldn't the rebels have attacked from that side?
Or did the presence of the fleet stop them from moving around the Death Star?

If you don't ask, how will you know?
As I know, the model was only a half half- completed DS, so it had no other side. In the novelisation, the rebell cruisers continiously bombarded the unfinished part of the DS. Likely it was started after the death of the Emperor. (It mentions this just after the destruction of the Executor if I remember well.) Personally, I think it was the other option for destroying the DS if the fighter attack would fail.

The Behind the Magic CD shows behind-the-scenes photos of model makers working on the DSII, and it's composed of unfinished deck layers.

Is it? The Falcon got in through a large tunnel/unfinished gap thing, but it was clearly skimming accross a finished and turbo-laser covered surface just before it reached the opening it used.
It seemed to be attacking along a mostly finished suface, as opposed to a massive, quarter-sphere sized missing chunk.
If you don't ask, how will you know?

They seem to have headed for the closest access point to the interior. They probably used the access tunnel because they had gotten their hands on a map for that part of the Death Star. Flying into the superstucture of the thing at high speed was hard enough without having to also try and find your own way in. Working you way into the unfinished side of the Death Star would have required slowing down in order to be able to work you way in and what if you come to a dead end with those Ties chasing you. The known route is a much safer option.
On a minor note, the place they enter was hardly finished. there were lots of whole and numorous missing gun emplacement(with several giun towers not even finished) which means this was the partially unfinished section of the Station. If this was one of the finished sections, the tunnel would have been filled in.

That was disapointing ..Should we show this Federation how to build a ship so we may have worthy foes? Typhonis 1

They were in a nearly complete sector, but by no means 100% done.

Yes. Specifically they were called reactor shafts in the ROTJ novelisation.Darth Garden Gnome wrote:A minor aside, but what were those enormous holes for? Access-tunnels for Imperial construction workers to get deep down in the Death Star and build more systems maybe?
I believe in a sign of Zeta.

It is highly unlikely to the point of impossibility that so small a force could mass enough gunfire to break up the station, and simply tearing up the surface might add a whole month to the construction time. No, the only way they could destroy such a large object was to turn the power of its own reactor against it.vakundok wrote:As I know, the model was only a half half- completed DS, so it had no other side. Agree. The crusiers would most likely require months to completely destroy the DS2. I ment that the other option was that the turbolaser fire (or other form of bombardment) from the cruisers would cut itself trough the inner decks to the power core. (Just like it was envisioned in an early draft for the RotJ.)Sea Skimmer wrote:It is highly unlikely to the point of impossibility that so small a force could mass enough gunfire to break up the station, and simply tearing up the surface might add a whole month to the construction time.
