Can Droidekas speak?

I'm watching AOTC right now, and it just occurred to me that the destroyer droids have never spoken during the moives. Are they equipped with a vocabulator, or are they mute?

When have they had a need to speak? Anyway I doubt they or most battle driod's can, as they have little use of the capability, it's likely that only the commander models and shipboard guard variant can talk. They've all already got long range datalinks after all.

It was my understanding that the speech module is called a "voder" unit, for VOice Decoder/EncodeR.

IIRC a vocabulator is the computer which has the info on how to speak. The vocoder does the actual talking.

AOTC:

"Uh-oh."

"Roger roger."

Looked like normal droids to me.

I have to disagree there, how could they effectively make the naboo civvies prisoners if they couldn't communicate? I also recall one of the basic battle droid heads saying "Uh oh" when it was connected to Threepio. I also seem to remember them squeling when Qui Gon and Obi Want knocked them over.

That same battledroid also said "My legs aren't moving; I must requite maintainence." while marching into the Arena.

We've never seen situations where Droidekas were required to speak, so it could go either way.

Are they listed as having vocorders in the TPM VD?

It's the entire point of detroyer droids. They're built only to destroy. The regular Neimoidian battle droids can do much more things a regular humanoid can, like being tank crew or serving morning coffee.

The force field is an upgrade.

That would be rather short-sighted. Say a group of battle droids was wiped out and a droideka is the only one left to report that danger to an unarmed nemoidian official. The droid would be reduced to panicky gestures and hopping up and down to convey the danger.

Assuming the Droideka even has enough AI or communication programming to provide a report, they'd probably just take it back to the ship/vehicle and hook it up to a computer, in which case it could comminicate through text (much like R2 did in the X-wing).

that would work and since Neimoidians rarely, if ever, would be at a site of a battle the radio seems like the only real need in a heavy attack droid that is always expected to be supported by normal battle droids. Beside have them not talk is down right unnerving to their opponents.

starwars.com wrote:Unlike the spindly battle droids, whose humanoid builds allow them a degree of versatility, droidekas are designed with one sole function in mind: the complete annihilation of their targets. The bronzen-armored combat automata has a frightening build, insectoid in its mix of curves and sharp angles. Slung at the end of heavy arms are immense twin blasters, which unleash destructive energy at a pounding pace. The destroyer droid can completely envelope itself in a globe of protective energy via its compact deflector shield generators.
I don't find it short-sighted, I find it to be specialization.

Yes why add more parts than something rea;;y needs? The Destroyer Droid really has no need to talk anyway.

just kidding

Dridika #1: So what's it like onNar Shadda
D2: Well they got all the same stuff but it's differetnt
D1: How so
D2: Well like you can buy Organic Oil there, But they don't want you to change your oil any old place, Grages, your home, etc
D2: But get this, if a Jedi stops you he can't search you, that the right they don't have.
D1: Aee msn I judy have to go there.

D1: -And you shall know that I am the bad ass sith when I lay my ritious vengence apon thee.
*Both Brodieka's unload a massive amount of blaster fire.*
D1: Did you see that, he should have blown us straight to the maker
D2: It's nothing it was just the shields
D1: No man, it was the force it had to be the force
D2: Hokey religions are nothing compared to a good set of blastes and a military spec shield generator.

That's an interesting mental image. :)
