Fighters vs. capships: Stackpole Style!

This seems to be a major topic. However, just how many capships do fighters kill off inthe X-wing series? Let's see:

Rogue Squadron
um....one. Drove off the Black Asp, destroyd a Lancer with 22 torpedos in a volley (remember, the last two didn't hit)

Wedge's Gamble
um...none. All capships were defeated by capships

The Krytos Trap
One strike cruiser (is that even a capship) because of its weak hull

The Bacta War
a VSD. frieghters shot at it, fighters shot at it, and a cruiser shot at it. Luck. drove off the Aggregator, w/a torp. volley. Lusankya was NOT defeated per se, but surrendered when Isard made a run.

Wraith Squadron
Night Caller: luck and innovative tactics (Piggy blew away the captain with a homemade laser cannon
Implacable: luck and innovative tactics ( Falynn flew into a breach and attacked th engine)

Iron Fist
Razor's Kiss: pre-emptive strike before the ship was FULLY operational

Solo Command
carrack-class cruiser: torp. volleys
Reprisal: a heavy bomb and torp. volleys
all others defeated by capships

Isard's Revenge
none. All the capships were defeated by capships

Now then, are you seeing a pattern here? Fighters ALONE have only detroyed small ships. I think this whole 'fighters destroying capships' is a brain bug.

Yes, I would say fighters alone are no match for a cs, however fighters supported by cs and with the enemies shields down, the cs will have a problem not only from enemy cruisers but from fighters as well.

Whoops, I forgot Starfighters of Adumar:

Three Star Destroyers, only one of which was reported destroyed. Master Stroke was destroyed by an unknown combination of fighters on missiling duty and attacking NR capships.

It is indeed blown out of proportion. And most of those strikes had to be coordinated to a degree not usually possible in battle.

But there are the Rogue Sqadron comics to consider however. I don't know about them, I've never read them.

So, if it's just a brain-bug, than it's even dumber that people insist that 12 X-Wings can take out an ISD's shields. Rogue Squadron was the only source people had to claim the anti-capitalship role of fighters, now they don't even have that. Heh.

The flip side however is we have a minium figure for ISD Shielding at 15.8 Teratons
If indeed as some Trekkys Claims that means that 24 Torps are enough to delive 15.8 Teratons of damage or...658 Gigaton Missles Each

Wholy Fuck then Two Missles Boats could take on the AQ by themselves

LMAO, Bean...I can see it now...a missle boat and a Defender enter Fed space and begin to pronouce the surrender of the Federation.

For the most part I believe the brain bug spawned from the games where it's easy to destroy any level of cruiser(sorry I supposed to believe a B-Wing Squad and a X-Wing Squad are able to destroy a SSD?! ...X-Wing Wing vs TIE fighter: Balance of Power, final mission of the rebel side. That was seriously the final straw...that and the guns of a Star Destroyer or any cruiser had the same impact as a X-Wing...seriously the game could've used at least some adjustment in that regard.)

Thus people see Stackpole saying Starfighters destroying any class of larger ship sometimes aussume he's saying the same equvilent.

...actually if I remember correctly nowhere in the comics(will have to review them again) does Rogue squadron destroy anything of capship level...mostly starfighter fighting.

THey suck. In Battleground Tatooine Escholo Loro, goes too as fully shielded ISD enters the hanger, and shoots 2 proton torpedoes, making it unstable, though she did shoot it in a hanger towards the reactor

I wouldn't bother if I were you, as comics go they have good production values, and some decent art. But seriously they are even more poorly written than most EU novel. Which is scary, consider that a short story should give you less room to screw up.

HA! I've got you beat. In Shadows of the Empire Evolution, Guri's ship (which is Millennium Falcon sized mind you) completely destroys a shielded ISD with 6 proton torpedoes.

And no they didn't hit the tower either!

Anybody wanna run a calc. on those torpedoes...sheesh. Seriously comics are good for basic information like: names, locations, aliens, ship types, etc. But if your dealing with any form of combat, forget it. Comics are even worse than WEG.

Federation Officer: Captain, the fighter has launched a single missle at the Borg cube.

Federation Captain: Are they insane? A single missle will never-oh. Shit. Ouch. That's not a pretty sight.

Here' another one in Crimson Empire a TIE Scimitar, overloads its reactor and takes more than a third of an ISD with it. Of course it was parked within on to the ship's hangar bays. Now come on since when does a TIE have a multi-gigaton reactor output.

And a ship design is usually designed to protect against damage from outside not inside. Look at some of the accidents that the US has had, a accident inside a ship can do damage.

True, but would it vaposrize a third of an ISD!?!?!

Okay well...maybe :D

I don't think it VAPORIZED that much, there was a hell load of loose wreckage afterwards.

If other things were set off in secondary explosions, easily.

Okay...okay maybe I exagerated a bit. I'll look through my collection and see if I can find the pic.

Yes, your correct. It would obvoiusly set off any missiles or fule in nearby fighters, thus adding to the explosion.

Even so the armor around the Reactor itself is speced to take a *Bombarmend by HTLs which rate in the Teraton range, secondary expolsions even from a hundred tie Engines is not going to do much compared to the single Teraton level descruction of a HTL bolt

The reactor didn't go off, Bean. It clearly shows that.

She took out the generator for the atmospheric containment shielding, causing explosive decompression. It wasn't a reactor.

I suppose there's no reason at all to assume that Kir Kanos, an Imperial Guardsman, did not rig the scimitar to explode or rig it with a bomb in any way whatsoever that was enough to do the damage it did?
