Superlaser at Geonosis

I was flipping through that Words of AOTC book at the bookstore today when I noticed something - the foundry on Geonosis actually uses this (relatively) small superlaser to melt ores for further processing. I thought that some here might find that interesting.

That must be one big ass foundry.

It's a tiny one, actually. Not even 30 metres across, IIRC. It's just called a superlaser because it uses the same firing method.

Makes sense. If you look closely at the final battle, you'll notice that the Republic gunships also use small superlasers in their bubble turrets.

So we're just stating the obvious here?

Isn't that something of an oxymoron?
How can you have a "small" superlaser?
I know what's meant a smaller scale, lower-yield version of the same technology, heh.

The Latin prefix "
super" means "over" or "above" (e.g., a ship's
superstructure is above the main deck). It does not properly have anything to do with size. A "magnalaser" would be a very large laser; a "superlaser" is simply a laser with characteristics "above" the norm.

Remember that you can have a small supercharger in your car.

Well, it's actual technical name could be anything, I suppose. Not that "superlaser" is wrong, but who knows. Maybe it's a Beam Blaster as opposed to a Pulse Blaster or some weird shit like that.

Good point.

"Superlaser", to the best of my knowledge, is slang for the Death Star's laser. The actual name for the many-lasers-into-one type weapon is "composite beam". Superlaser seems to have been adopted as a colloquial term, however.

See? I was right. That's because I'm so cool and all.
