Now that The Unifying Force has been released and the war with the Yuuzhan Vong is over (no spoilers there - obviously, it would have to end or otherwise that GFFA would be become the Vong's GFFA), where do you think it should go from here? Currently, the only main SW books being readied are the novels that comprise the Clone Wars series (which I am most likely NOT going to follow) as well as two new novels by Timothy Zahn himself, Survivor's Quest and an as-yet-untitled hardcover.
The first deals with Mara and Luke recovering the Outbound Flight Project wreck (this will most likely be post-Hand of Thrawn given that the New Republic is named in the synopsis and as we know, it died in Star by Star), the second dealing with Thrawn's early years as hinted in Vision of the Future ).
Aside from that, we know as for post-NJO books, Troy Denning (Star by Star) is writing a mass market paperback trilogy post NJO in 2005.
Personally, aside from Clone Wars , I don't think that they should do another ambitious story arc for some time - give it a rest and time to cool down (something that Braga and Berman should have done after Star Trek Voyager, but since this is a Star Wars board, I won't go into that). That's why I believe this trilogy will focus more on rebuilding the galaxy and dealing with the aftermath of TUF.

Pelleon assassinated. Imperial Remnant leaves the GA. It super-remilitarizes, with help from huge secret Imperial holdings in either the Unknown regions, or outside the galaxy, and partially reconquers the galaxy. Begin long war.

By Jove, that's Brillant! It's a wonder Del Rey/LucasFilm didn't think of that!

Nah...he forget Unknown Sith Lord having a new Darkside Artifact that puts Palpy to shame...and tries to bend Space-Time to his will only to be foiled by either a Solo Child or Leia herself because Luke is too enfeebled to do anything.

*yawn* Contrived Empire-resurrections are kind of absurd by this point.

Damn! I knew I forgot something. Shouldn't there be a Imperial Superweapon and/or Emperor's Storehouse that can unleash certain doom as well?

The New Republic begins rebuilding, but animosity rears its ugly head as a large faction wants to exterminate the Yuuzahn Vong for what they've done ot the galaxy. Pirate vessels begin preying on Vong ships. Finally, after being simultaneusly successful with the public, but stymied in the Senate, the radicals walk out of the New Republic. The NR begins a slow and painful spilt into two halves: the moderate New Republic and the radical Free Star League. The FSL begins to seize New Republic assets in various systems, but since the planets have legally seceded from the Republic, the Senate is effectively powerless to stop them.
The FSL grows slowly until it finally rallies around a single leader: former New Republic Fleet Admiral Guwen Halkun. Born on the planet Balantos, he lost his wife, son, and two daughters to the Vong, and he now sports a shining green prosthetic right eye. Halkun begins a firey war of words against the Republic, winning over even more systems and painting the Senate as an inept group that is too busy arguing with themselves to do what needs to be done.
The uneasy peace is shattered when FSL bombers drop chemical weapons onto Vong worlds, killing billions. Worldships are destroyed by attacks from organized war fleets. Finally, Zonoma Sekot itself is attacked and reduced to slag by the flagship of the FSL, the Executor-class Super Star Destroyer Lethal.
Even with the Vong effectively erased from the galaxy, the New Republic is slow to act, partly due to widespread sympathy for the FSL's intentions, partly due to a propaganda blitz saying the the Vong were intending to rebuild their war fleet. Admiral Palleon meets with Admiral Halkun and expresses his personal admiration for the younger man's willingness to take drastic action to ensure the safety of the galaxy. The Imperial Remnant signs a nonagression pact with the Free Star League, which now effectively controls 1/4 of the galaxy.
Meanwhile, the Jedi are equally divided. Luke Skywalker, having lost a nephew in the war against the Vong, has decided to step forward and become a more active leader for the Order. Many Jedi, however, sympathize with the League and schisms begin to develop. Luke manages to hold the Jedi Order together by pure will, but it is clear that troubles are on the horizon.
While all this is happening, the Chiss have become embroiled in a full-scale civil war. One faction, the 'Newers', wants to update the old ways, implement new technology, and join the galaxy at large. The other side the 'Elders', wants to keep the Chiss to themselves. Although smaller in number, the Newers are able to score stunning victories against the Elders using their Clawcraft. Both Soontir and Jagged Fel are on the Newers' side.
Thus, the stage is set for an even greater conflict than the Vong war. Will the FSL become the dominant faction in the galaxy? Or will the New Republic hold on? And if push comes to shove, which side will the Jedi fight for? Only time can answer...

I concur. People, the Empire is DEAD. All that remains of Palpatineās Galactic Empire is a mere eight sectors of space located on the border between known space and the Unknown Regions.
They're not going to rise again, dammit - neither are the Sith while w'ere at it. Let it go!!

I disagree. The idea of a new Empire rising is a good one... as long as one avoids it being a mere replication of Palpatine's Empire.
I'd like to see a story, set some years after NJO, that deals with a stronger Imperial Remnant, an attempt at restructuring a Republic, as well as numerous other hegemonies and such. Keep out this "Begin long war" bullshit. I'd like to see some diplomatic tensions between the various factions in the galaxy, rather than militaristic, hot wars.

Then it aint the Empire. And the resurrected shit has been done to death. Let it die.

I am. At this point, if the EU doesn't greatly improve, it just needs to be put out of it's misery.

We should clip Kuja's post and forward it to LucasBooks. Good ideas there.

The YV should not be able to walk away from war like that. Either one side needs to wipe out the other, or it should be wiped out. There should be a new war, with radicals launching campaigns of organized terrorism against the YV, and with officials in the Galactic government not responding to them because they sympathize with their activity.

Here's the offical synopsis:
Fan favorite and New York Times bestselling author Timothy Zahn returns to the Star Wars universe with Survivor's Quest, an exciting and dangerous adventure featuring Luke and Mara Jade Skywalker. The story begins with a message from a surprising source: Nirauan, the planet where Thrawn, dangerous disciple of Emperor Palpatine, once held sway; and from which Luke and Mara barely escaped with their lives. After fifty years, the remains of Outbound Flight -- a pioneering Jedi expedition viciously destroyed by Thrawn -- have been found on Nirauan. Now, the fiercely honor-bound aliens who reside there wish to turn over the remnants of the doomed mission to the New Republic. Joining Luke and Mara Jade on their strange journey are an officer of the post-Palpatine Empire, escorted by a detachment\ of Imperial stormtroopers; a party of diplomats from a gentle alien species that reveres the fallen Jedi for saving them from blood-thirsty conquerors; and a New Republic ambassador who harbors his own mysterious agenda.[/i]

Seconded, it may have kept me company for many a lonely night, but the EU is kinda like Old Yella, no one wants to put it down, but if someone doesn't it'll break out and give us all rabies....

1. I would paint the GA as being an effort to win the war quickly and effectively. Then, things would fall back to the old order of NR + tiny states.
2. Didn't Ender speculate as to the Vong having some Worldships left? I can't imagine them throwing EVERYTHING into the sun. I would paint it as them disposing of all major military assets - battleships, cruisers, etc and keeping some Coralskippers and such small stuff around just in case, plus Worldships to hold excess population.

Okay Hold right there...
HEY ZAHN! YOU KILLED THRAWN! LAY OFF IT ALREADY!
Addendum:
My ideal EU scenario would be the revitalization, but not remilitarization of the Imperial Remnant. In fact, they will expand enough in the wake of the Vong threat in order to henceforth be renamed themselves. The "New Empire" for lack of a better term. (or as so ill refer to them). The New Republic is restablished as well.
THe Jedi order epands and its numbers revitalize across the galaxy. They are once again on their way to becoming a galxy wide order dedicated to peace and stability. In fact, int he wake of the Vong threat, they are once again revered in their role and they are allowed to move somwewhat freely between the Empire/Republic and other nation-states.
However the New Empire and New Republic will come to odds over something....hmmm
okay, A border dispute in the Former Unknown regions (they have since been sufficiently mapped.) imperial ships and Republic Ships are stationed along the imaginary border in dispute. All sides anticipate a peaceful resolution.
Plot thickening juice dded to Mixture. Reublic ships destroy Imperial ships without warning, due to a lack of information, some prejudice on the commander's part, a complete error. The New Empire isforced to respond by attacking the Republic and occupying on of the Border worlds.
the conflict devolves into war. However, since the Jedi have been rising as an order they now are in service in both the Empire and Republic, creating a division in the ranks. One side wants to support the Imperial cause, one side for the REpublic, and a small group of waning influence which tries to keep the conflict neutral. this New Jedi order is susceptible to nationalist feelings and loyalty to their home worlds. At first the Jedi split is relatively harmless, since a majority of Jedi choose to remain on their worlds and enforce the peace as Law ENforcement. suddenly this split widens as Force Sensitive and initiated JEdi serving in the military begin to see front line combat. And then it comes down to a jedi versus Jedi situation, with each side believing that they are serving the light and each side believing that since they are following the path the force has led them too, it is okay to fight.
Possible incidents could include:
The death of the aging Luke Skywalker, on the eve of a resolution to the conflict between the Jedi and possibly the war. this would plunge the order into a near Anarchy. Yes the Republic has its Advisory council, but the Imperial Jedi that serve planets outside of that Jurisdiction feel no obligation to it.
The formation of an Imperial Jedi Advisory Council, with a Jedi highly placed in the government. I would not hesitate to even use Jacen Solo for this role in part due to the events in Force Heretic I: Remnant. This could even Pit Jaina versus Jacen if she acheives her goal of serving on the Republics advisory council (see unifying force). These Imperial Jedi would NOT however be of a dark side nature. They would be legitimate light side Jedi but with different opinions.
Ben Skywalkers first encounter with the "Skywalker Anger"
Yoda's species? Nahhh, maybe...
And there would be something attatching it to the prequels and OT, but nothing I can think of at this time.

Hey, it's his specialty. He's also trying to redeem himself with a 2nd hardcover that will cover Thrawn's early life as well as the Outbound Flight incident...

We know how the second Hardcover will turn out though, seems to me like he is trying to squeeze everything he can out of that one character short of a movie or television series.
