The entire surface of planet Coruscant is one continuous city.

Where does breathable atmosphere come from?

I ask this because, AFAIK, only plant photosynthesis is the only large-scale method known for producing free oxygen, and I know of no large-scale plant life on the planet.

also there are those big organic "things" mentioned in the NJO. They are ike huge vats of organic stuff. But I don't remember the title

That would again show how far progressed the SW galaxy is, when they could hold and clear the atmosphere of a big and populated planet like Coruscant without natural help.

I think that is very impressing.....

Something tells me that they're not using tiny grippers to physically pluck the CO2 apart. I'm guessing that they probably chemically convert CO2 to O2, though the question remains: what do they do with the excess carbon? My guess, which solves both conundrums, is that they use a photosynthetisis to convert the CO2 (along with H2O) to O2 and sugar, thereby solving both the atmosphereic problem and some of the food importation problem.

Didn't the YV shut down the converters after invading Coruscant?

Coruscant must be supported by vast biosphere-supporting plants to maintain its humidity, weather, and oxygen content at sentient-comfortable levels.

Coruscant generates/absorbs too much energy--I believe someone did a calc which proved that Coruscant as it exists must need large heat pumps (presumably to space) to keep the biosphere at habitable temperatures.

Hmmm.. does Coruscant still have oceans?

If not, the more likely culprit may be actually from down below. Where there're probably a lot of algae-like growth.. either that or oxygen factories.

Coruscant has oceans or atleast big bodies of water, because in one of the NJO books (rebel stand??)mara gets sick while she is on one of Landos "islands" IIRC. But I think that anything in the oceans would be dead from years of sewage run off

The planet is near completely connected, but there are still isolated pockets on the planet that retain little or no civilization. The polls being one spot and presumably the few bodies of water as well.

That's one of the most interesting faucets of Coruscant. Can anyone imagine how much waste heat and the like is generated by Courscant powerplants and energy hungry appliances?

The amount of thermal pollution would be incredible. Which brings me to my point.

Thats relatively easy. Its obvious that Courscant doesn't have any active volcanoes. This indicates the planet itself is a dead planet. With a core that is not super heating it could be possible to drive massive heat sinks into the core and then disapate the energy into the core.

That's silly. There's not enough thermal gradient between the waste heat and the core.

Waste heat can be collected by heat sinks and converted into radiant energy and directly transmitted into the vacuum.

Yea, but with all the plant life that they introduced (assuming they convert CO2 to O2) I doubt it would have made a difference.

The YV almost certainly rapidly replaced the biosphere-maintenance plants with biological counterparts.

That's small compared to razing the top levels planet-wide and laying down some flora and fauna while moving the planet's friggin' orbit and grinding up a moon into a ring.

Heh, I didn't even know Coruscant had any moons. Although as it is in the movies, you can't even tell Coruscant has a sun (except for changing times of day).

As for oceans on Coruscant...while EU authors like Michael P. Kube-McDowell like to believe otherwise, simple observation of Coruscant's surface from the movies reveal that there are no bodies of water; none large enough to be of any significance. If there are any at all they are beneath the surface, like in Rogue Squadron where they had to destroy the underground resevoirs to destroy the planet's shield.

All you need in some sort of method, akin to how refrigeration works, of forcing heat into some sort of heat sink (we know from shielding technology they have ways to store enormous quantities of heat) and then radiate it into space.

Heat would naturally flow from the planet to cold space via radiation. The idea here is to accelerate the process to ensure the planet does not overheat.

Well, I've just started reading The Final Prophecy and Corran and Tahiri have just crash landed a YV ship into the Western Sea, which is apparently the single body of water on Courscant.

IIRC they melted a bit of the polar ice cap, not destroy underground resevoirs

What if the recycle the heat?? I mean they are creating gobs of it why not recycle it and put it to use?
