Most Star Wars fans always casually mention how Lando betrayed Han Solo by turning him over to the Empire. But, can anyone really blame him? He was essentially a mayor of a city, and he was responsible for all the lives on that city. It doesn't take a genius to realize that Vader was threatening to kill his citizens if he didn't help them capture Leia, Han and Chewie.

So what would you have done in Lando's place? You've got Vader threatening to kill your people and torture the shit out of you (most likely) if you don't play along when Solo arrives and let Vader do his dirty work in your carbon-freezing chamber. Do you hand over Solo? Or do you tell Vader to do his worst?

You hand over the Solo. Although I think the storyline developed in such a way as to make that clear - even admitting Chewie's rage.

Hand over Solo
and toss the 'instant self destruct' to take out Vader

Thought it really was lose/lose for him.

Don't hand over han. Get force choked and and an imp garrison on your city.

Hand over han and Vader "alters the deal" and leaves a garrison on your city anyway.


See? Lando made the right choice he stayed alive by handing over han.

I've never seen anyone blame Lando for what he had to do.
