Emperor's Force Abilities

Has it ever been determined how well known it is that the Emperor uses the Force?
I would expect that he would not hide it since he would have no reasont o but several things in the Origional Movies go against this thought.
1. In ANH there is the one General or Admiral (cannot remember which) who insults Vader and his sorcerous ways. I doubt he would have said that if he knew the Emperor was a Sith.
2. Tarkin mentions that Vader is the last of the Jedi. This suggests that we may see him in Ep 4 since he seems to know that Vader was Anakin and used to be a Jedi. His statements might not mean anything towards the Emperor since the Emperor was never a Jedi.
3. In ROTJ when Luke strikes down Vader he throws aside his lightsaber. Not a smart move to do around a Sith Lord. So he must not have known what the Emperor was capable of doing. Which also means Yoda either does not know as well or that he chose not to tell Luke the extent of the Emperor's powers.
Anything else that helps clear this up from the movies?
