From the highest-resolution picture I could find:

Cool, eh? You can clearly see the tripod mount, the cable power feed, and the electronic scope.

I'm amazed you can take such shots. This gun isn't recognized officially, is it?

Cool. Though I'd probably classify it as a MMG rather than a heavy. The E-web seems to dwarf it in size. I do find it interesting that the tripod has shock absorbers.

Also notice that the scope mount seems to be replicated all around the gun. Wonder what accessories can go there?

I can't. This shot comes from a high-res scan of one of the publicity photos. They're sold commercially as part of the Star Wars ScreenThemes wallpaper pack so I won't post any of the images in their entirety, but I'm just cropping out a small piece of one of the images here.

Nope, but it looks really cool, doesn't it? It even has a sort of "Gatling gun" look to it. The Rebel trench equipment at Hoth has not received much attention in the literature for some reason.

Kinda reminds me of the BFA for the M2. Gives it the gatling look for sure but really just needs the support.

You see it firing in the film though, IIRC.

I'm sure that the scene by scene part of ESB on the BTM CD has a brief amount of information about this gun.

I'd say the E-Web is almost like small 20 mm cannon mounts, even more than HMG, given that the E-Web is effective against small spacecraft.

But again, with Mike's WWI analogy for Hoth, the MMG represents it alright. One wonders if there's a more proper GPMG blaster counterpart, with the T-21 LMG-counterpart.

I think the E-Web is comparable to a .50cal or the heavier Russian 14.5mm gun while this Rebel weapon is more comparable to the M134 7.62mm minigun. One is a heavy machinegun and anti-material weapon while the other is a heavy ROF infantry supression weapon.

I don't know of any infantry-mounted Miniguns so the roles probably off.

A good SW parallel to the Minigun are the composite beam ball-turrets aboard the LAAT/i.

I'd agree with that- it's effectiveness against small aircraft reminds me of the ZPU 14.5mm AA gun series.

I'm not really sure, but pressed, I'd give the E-Web the .50 cal role with the rebel MMG the .30 cal role as seen in WWII. Which is fitting since alot of the combat in SW is based off of WWII.

The weapon show in Mike's pic just reaks of anti personel while the E-web speaks of a anti material weapon. The fact that the rebels set their MMG up in the trenches speaks to its anti personel ability. It wasn't there to fight against the ATAT's but the mounted infantry once it dismounted, as was most of the rebel arms.

Truely if the weapon shown was anti-armor, even if it was light armor, it'll be in a turret to take advantage of heigth instead of down in the trenches where grazing firer is effective against infantry.

They did play with and develope a 5.56 mini but the weight was prohibitive. It was, of course, possible but not really an option for the infantry.

Actually, the XM-214 microgun wasn't really possible at all. It would take an entire squad to move (one guy to move the 15 kg gun, one for the tripod, and the rest for ammo) take a while to set up, and had a recoil force so extreme (110 kg) that if the tripod wasn't on very flat ground, it would tip over and fall. Also, since it fired at 10 000 rounds per minute, magazine reloading was simply not an option, and only half a second of ammo could be carried by the squad. It also proved to be too weak for AA use. Neat idea, but ultimately impractical.

Was not the ZPU series AA guns wheel mounted ? This one is tripod mounted indicating similarities to a machine gun.

I'd say Hoth in space is more representative of modern carrier task forces, and the groundside combat is pretty analogous to WWI (with trenches and the AT-ATs, as Mike noted), until the Snowspeeders arrive, anyway, though in this case aircraft are impotent against the armor, and the analogy may be still correct.

Just got this pic from the Hoth Battle:

Think it's some sort of mmg in the foreground and a target spotter just behind him:

Btw have all the original movies on DVD but the quality is as the example above. If you need a screenshot or sumthing just PM me.

Where the heck is the trigger on that gun? Is the soldier's hand grasping it? Seems an awfully weird spot for a trigger if so.

IIRC, the guy with the bino's is the same guy that was moving his men around and the same that spotted and reported the ATAT's to the base. I'd probably call him the PLT Commander or Company Commander in charge of the defense.

Yeah, some where before the imfamous shot of the ATAT penetrating the rebel lines, there is a shot with what appears to be Imperial troops charging the trench line. If you can, will you get me a screen shot of that?

Hmmm, just ran through my original version and didn't see the specific scene I mentioned before so it must be in the SE. However, just after Wedge brings down the ATAT and after General Rieken orders the retreat and they show R2 being loaded into the X Wing, there is a quick shot of the rebel line with at least three troopers running towards the line with a quick exchange of fire.
