tie fighters in atmosphere

i was just playing rogue leader on the game cube and in the game tie fighters can fly in the atmosphere.
i believe to remember that tie fighters are not able to fly in atmosphere.
do i remember correctly? if yes, why cant they?

I don't think you are remembering correctly. We have read of multiple incidents of atmospheric combat involving TIE fighters in the EU. They lose lots of maneuverability, but they are still functional fighters. They can even enter atmospheres from space and things like that.

Rouge Leader kicks so much ass. Shame it's so short. The mission where you escort the transport on Kothlis rocks. That just screams graphic awesomeness, until green laser light flashes by your cockpit!!!
