i just cot a copy of "Vision of the Future" only to notice at home that it´s part of a series. would you recommend to read the other one first or is that no problem?

Yes

The first one you want to read to understand vison is Heir to the Empire, The Dark Force Rising, Followed by The Last Command

Then read Specter of the Past and end up with Vision of the Future

All of those are by Zahn, and all of them are very good

The ones you want to read when you get the chance is the X-Wing series of books as they fill in some gaps you will be left with after Zahn and the ones written by AA are quite good and the Wes/Wedge angle is increably funny at points

Oh and AA acutal kills of charaters, Stackpole is a bit of a Pilot Wank,

KJA you should avoid at all costs and only read to fill in gaps in the timeline
But Zahn above all is the best of those lot of EU writers

Scepter and Visions are a must to read in order. Tim wanted to write it as a trilogy but they wouldn't let him. That's why they're so long. (yes, I actually asked him!) They do take place after the Thrawn trilogy. A good bit in fact.

Yes they are AFTER the fact

Find any of the New Jedi Order Books( DON'T READ IT YET) And flip to the back for the nice looking Time-line that lists every SW book ever made and how soon after ROTJ it occers

They're post-ANH, Bean. (ie the years they use are based off of ANH being year 0)

A.C. Cripsin's Han Solo trilogy (Hutt Gambit, Paradise Snare, Rebel Dawn) is worth reading. They aren't brilliant but it a fun and quick run through the life of everyone favorite scoundrel.

i´ve read the solo trilogy, also 5 or 6 years ago.
and the lando calrissian trilogy. it was ok, a bit annoying that the only weapon he uses is his little miniblaster.

Was that the old Han Solo trilogy or the new one? I'm not sure, but I don't think the new Han Solo trilogy was even released 5 years ago.

i´´m not sure. han had some droid with tentacles which didnt know where it came from. in the last book he finds the species he was created by and the look like him. i hope i´m not mixing this up with the calrissian trilogy.

You are mixing it up with the Lando trilogy.

Was it the one where Han is running around in the Corporate Sector?

Stackpole, Aliston, and Zhan are the core SW writers. Read all of their SW books (and preferably SW short stories as well) and you will get a good feel for the EU.

Here is how I recomend you read the series.

Thrawn Triology
X-Wing series (read I, Jedi, which isn't in the series, before you read Starfighters of Amudar)
Hand of Thrawn Duology
Dark Tide I & II
Rebel Dream & Rebel Stand

That will give you a good over view of the SW universe in general, a feeling for the main characters (both from the movies and from the novels), some of the most important historical facts in the series, and will give you a taste for some of the non-major characters that got into the series (Rogue Squadron, Booster Terrik, etc...)

In all, that is 19 novels by those three authors. If you have the inclination, get the Tales from the Empire and Tales from the New Republic books. They have lots of short stories in them, and there are several short stories by both Stackpole and Zhan (there are even two different stories that are co-written by the two authors).

Unless you want to become intimately acquainted with all the characters you could quite easily just skip all the Bantam stuff and start with the NJO, they don't really use a whole load of old Bantam plot points and mainly it's just characters which you would be fine with without too much background. Just my opinion, most (90%) of the Bantam stuff is stand alone and just neatly presses the rest button at the end of the book/duology/trilogy/whatever ready for the next author.

Here's some

The X-Wing Series
-Rogue Squadron
-Wedge's Gamble.
-Solo Command
(If your a starfighter buff like me, you'll want to read all 9 X-Wing books, but these are the main core that get mentioned througout the EU and are great.)

Thrawn Trilogy
-Heir to the Empire
-Dark Force Rising
-The Last Command

If you can stomach absolute crap read this trilogy. There are a few things that will forever resonate through the EU.

Jedi Academy Trilogy
-Jedi Search
-Dark Apprentice
-Champions of the Force

The Hand of Thrawn Duology (this duology sets up the Galaxy when the NJO starts)
-Specter of the Past
-Vision of the Future

In the New Jedi Order series

Agents of Chaos duology
-Hero's Trial
-Jedi Eclipse

Enemy Lines duology
-Rebel Dream
-Rebel Stand

This book stands alone
-Traitor

Those would be my main recommendations. Events that take place in those books have effects in the rest of the EU. They all occur after Return of the Jedi.

Here's some prior to Return of the Jedi.

-Cloak of Deception
-Shadows of the Empire
-Tales from the New Rebublic

DG_Cal_Wright, you don't like the Thran Triology? That IMO (and likely MOST peoples) is the best triology and some of the best books in the entire EU.

That's the old trilogy. The new one is composed of:
  • Hutt Gambit
    The Paradise Snare
    Rebel Dawn
All by A.C. Crispin
