While there have been more than enough oddities, flaws and downright stupid issues with Trek, has anyone noticed any issues with Wars engineering? The only one that leaps to mind immediately is the shaft to the DS2 reactor in the Emperor's throne room. And if anyone can explain that one away, I would really appreciate it.

it is next to the elevator. it is notthe only place with similer pits. See ANH. I may serve as easy access to the interieor for the perpose of repairs. It does have a railing around if safety was your concern

A shaft for easy access in the throne room? Im sure palpy will be real pleased if repair men need to barge their way into his innermost sanctum so they can repair a broken system a few decks down.

Palpatine going down the shaft:

"All is proceding as I have forseen. This shaft has served its purpose."

well... maybe its pretty to look at the core? could be aesthetic.

More likely a necessity.

The better to get to the room if the elevator is damaged or broken.

IIRC, the room was some sort of engineering section before the Emperor set up shop in it.

You do not RC. The Throne Room is at the top of a tower sticking out of the Death Star (they show it in one of the establishing shots). Why would there be an engineering section there? And why would a 60%-complete station already have an area whose function has changed? And why, above all else, would the Emperor take sloppy seconds as far as real estate goes?

The RotJ novelisation says that the throne room was previously the command station. (After Dagobah, at the very beginning of chapter 4.)

Constructing the throne room around a dangerous reactor shaft was a bad idea in the first place. There are a lot of free and safe areas on a moon sized battlestation where the throne room could have been placed.

I can understand some of these points...but have to say, why would the Emperor choose a tower with a shaft that leads directly to the reactor? This is the DS2!! There have to be a thousand towers scattered over the completed portion of the hull...surely there must be SOME towers that have a nice big window that Palpatine can put his rocker in front of and NO incredibly dangerous shaft leading to the main reactor that my trusted henchman might one day throw me down.

By the way, how large is the exterior of the tower in the establishing shot? is there really room for the shaft as depicted during the screaming death plunge of the Emperor?

OR...Maybe Palpatine, getting old decided to use the thermal vent that was exploited on DS1 by the rebels for his own personal heater. He is getting old after all.

Hm. That wuold be the biggest fucking air conditioner in human history. Besides, your link says it's a reactor shaft.

the link also stated that palpy could control the entire death star from that particular room. which would make sense, considering it's in an engineering section.

Which makes sense, considering it's a throne room, he is the Emperor, and he wouldn't have it any other way.

Perhaps he selected it because it would have the best view of the coming battle? He did clearly want Luke to see the Rebel fleet getting slaughtered after all.

Because it is at the very top of a tower that gives him a great view, with only one direction for entry, and with loads of energy, which could generate ass loads of shields to cover the tower.

But checking the novelization, I find this:

That's a lot more specific than "some sort of engineering section."

Make sure you know what the specifics are before blurting them out.

EU failure?

I recall one particularly odd roleplaying session where our ace pilot accidentally kicked himself into another universe, as was surprised to find himself flying through a strange metal tunnel, ony to come out into a huge space witha big metal ball in it. Next thing he knew, this ugly old guy ina black robe hit his windshield. ed the hell out of both of them, I swear.

We later found out why the shaft was there. Vader, who wound up helping us save our universe so his wouldn't distintegrate, read about 74% of all the Star Wars crap that had been produced. He was most disturned, but did find out where to put *his* clone bodies for the 2054-edition sequels. Since the Death Star was going to blow up anyway, he just made it mostly hollow and kept a nice pit nearby to throw Palpatine into. Made it real easy to get done on time.

Later on, he and Luke had a father-son bonding by going to New York [Marvel Comics version 1970] and seeing the original release. We are unsure what he though of Greedo being shot.

A little while later, we accidentally brought along a Tenchi-Muyo cabbit into Star Wars, who, ate too much wood from Endor and got bloated, thus forming the Second Death Star. We replaced her with an inflatable version since we didn't want her exploding.
