Why did't Luke...

...simply cut through the door of the trash compactor in ANH with his lightsaber? After we saw what Qui Gon did to the blast door in TPM, this really makes me wonder.
Any ideas?

The shielding perhaps.

Did he have it then?

Perhaps it malfunctioned? After all his lightsaber did fell in the water with him.
Though, I'm not even sure if he carried the lightsaber with him in the first place. (Was it hooked on to the ST belt?) It would be dangerous for him to wield a weapon he hasn't had much training on.

I don't think that he would simply leave it in the Falcon. Obi-Wan would have surely reminded him to take it with him if he would have forgot it, before exiting the Falcon. (You know his opinion about loosing lightsabers)

I very much doubt Luke was carrying it around. If he was, it was stuck up his ass or something because we didn't see it on his belt once he shed the Stormtrooper armor.

Then we must ask ourselves, why he hadn't taken it with him, when exiting the Falcon.

He didn't have it with him.
In Shadows of the Empire, it is verified that a lightsabre will cut through a magnetically-sealed door.

Meaning that if Luke had been wisely enough to get it before walking around in the Death Star, they would have been in much less trouble in the trash compactor.
Now I understand, why Obi-Wan got so angry withAnakin in AOTC. It's situations like this where you learn the value of the lightsaber.

He had damn little training in it and hence it was no where near a practical weapon?

Why should he have it with him? It's going to be of absolutely no use to him.

Additionally, Luke may have thought that the weapon itself might have been safer to remain onboard the Falcon (probably in the shielded compartments) than carrying it with him. If they got caught and captured, the Imperials would have taken it from him.

If they were caught and captured he's have bigger fish to fry.

Perhaps, but not everybody thinks about what's going to happen later. Most are concerned with initial stuff in the present.

Luke might well be smart enough to realise that if he got nailed with a lightsaber he'd have some serious explaining to do.
Not to mention Ben might have cautioned him, knowing Anakin was aboard.

Lightsabers aren't part of a Stormtroopers equipment and they where trying to blend in. Imagine getting to the detention block and having to anser awkward questions on the funny glow rod on your belt.

A piece in one of the WEG sourcebooks mentions that the stormtroopers who captured Luke on Endor in RotJ didn't have any idea what his lightsabre actually was, and assumed it was some kind of flare, IIRC.
Although I'd assume that Imperial security officers aboard the Death Star would probably be a bit more educated.

Educated or not Vader would recognize a lightsaber, especially his own.

Also Lord Vader was onboard the Death Star and they'd have seen his Light Saber on his belt. Stormies aren't exactly dumb, they'd atleast recognise it and ask questions.

They might or might not. The fact is still that if he'd be captured there were people that would.

However even low-ranking Imperial officers recognize them, as the one who presented Luke to Vader in ROTJ mentioned that "he was armed only with this". They know it's a weapon.
As for getting caught with a lightsaber, if Luke and co. were caught they might not really have much trouble. They'd probably be detained and Kenobi taken, but the rest might get off relatively scott-free.

What? They board the Empire's premier battle station and attempt to stage a jailbreak on Death Row and you think they'll get off scot free?

Scratch that, I was thinking pre-escape. If they were captured onboard the MF before they killed anyone. Obviously that was not the case.

What? Are you forgetting about the Falcon's not-quite-legal accoutrements, like the massive weapons or the smuggling compartments they'd find their prisoners in?

I still say the reason he didn't take the saber is because he had almost no ideas of it's capabilities or full usage of it any form beyond a few training sessions.
He was still more confident with a blaster then he would've been with the Lightsaber.
