ANH questions
2 questions.....
This site has made me see that the empire really isnt that bad....why did the people hate it so much? What was it about daily life under the Empire that was so opressive? they look rather normal....(referring to lukes family at the beginning of ANH)
And when Luke wanted to go to the "Academy", what "Academy" was he referring to?

Re: ANH questions
That is the big problem of the Rebellion. in 99% of the galaxy, there is every-day buissness, without anything amiss. They live with the Empire, and nobody gets hurt.Romulan_nemesis wrote:2 questions.....

The Rebellion only lives from the rest, the problem cases. Theat is, why they were never really acknowledged and when they were at the top of state, not really taken seriously. They were only a samall prostst group that won through luck.
But of course, it was white-washed by revisionist history that made it look like that everyone hated the Empire.

Luke's attitude when talking to Ben seemed to suggest that hatred (or at the least, contempt) for the Empire was common for the area.
I believe in a sign of Zeta.

Yep, Tatooine is one of the problem cases.Spanky The Dolphin wrote:Luke's attitude when talking to Ben seemed to suggest that hatred (or at the least, contempt) for the Empire was common for the area.
I think Luke was only really angered, when Biggs told him two days before, that the Empire plans to size control of the economy of Tatooine and put it into state hands. Most likely that ignited the hate.
But I'm sure that there is an economical reason for the Empire, to do that...

That doesn't seem very likely to me.
At the least, I don't find it very believable. It would be too recent considering how Luke acted.

I can't think of any other reason for Luke to hate the Empire. He hadn't any beef with the troops stationed there, because they were far away. The Empire never did anything in the sector and news travel only spearly to Tatooine.
For the EMpire, Tatooine was bearly existant, and they simply ignored it, only maintaining a minimal garrison, de facto Jabba was still in charge oven Tatooine.

The majority of it's subjects didn't hate it. Most probably didn't think about it much and simply accepted the status quo. It wasn't until Alderaan that your average joe woke up and even then the response was fairly apathetic. This site has made me see that the empire really isnt that bad....why did the people hate it so much? The reason it seems quite wide spread is we see places like Tattooine for the most part where hatred and/or resentment is more commonplace. After all until the Empire came along a lot of those planet were probably Republican in name only and enjoyed a fair amount of autonomy. Something they lost under the Empire.
And let's face it, Luke's a young kid and they're more likely to turn radical than most.

Well for the normal human, it was not a bad life as long as you were middle or upper class. Lower class were usually the ones working harder, but that is how it is with any civilization. But the injustices are things like: slavery for humans but mostly non humans, harsh dealing with people who oppose the Empire (Tarkin landed a ship on top of rioters because they would not disperse), massive military build up, conquoring of civilizations who do not want to be part of the Empire, and a bunch of other crap.
The truth is that life was more orderly when the Empire was ruling, the build up of the military provided protection of the hundreds of trillion of Imperial citizens, and even though there were strict laws, it was not that bad as long as you are loyal to the Empire and you do your part for the Empire.
And the Academy was I believe a piolts academy.

Oh no, not the "Evil doesn't exist" debate!
Maybe (*puts on Machiavelli hat*) the truth is that the human (and other) masses are merely ignorant putty in the hands of the powerful and crafty.
Just as the corrupt Republic and decadent Jedi Knights molded the people to their whims, so too the Emperor and his Sith took and shaped them to his designs, when the former powers became too complacent.
Likewise when the Empire became overconfident and self destructive, a new power caught the people's imagination and carved out a new order.
You can fool most of the people most of the time, and some of the people all of the time!

Why is there so much hatred for the state in the rural US?
There isn't, but there are enough paranoid militant nutjobs out there to make you think so. A vocal minority is sometimes heard a lot louder than the content majority.

Biggs went off to the academy and eventually jumped ship to join the Rebels.evilcat4000 wrote:So Luke would have ended up as a TIE pilot had he not met Obiwan.Spanky The Dolphin wrote:The Imperial Training Academy. Luke wanted to be a starpilot.
History? I love history! First, something happens, then, something else happens! It's so sequential!! Thank you first guy, for writing things down!
