I would assume they don't, being that they are generally ascetics who practice self-denial and disdain seeking pleasure...especially from something unhealthy.

Yet in my original edition novelization of Star Wars, Obi-Wan is portrayed puffing a water pipe as he introduces Luke to the Lightsaber.

Also, I remember a Star Wars comic where a padawan learner is introdiced to a Jedi Master ( whom we first assume is merely a beast of burden)...who also smokes a water pipe.

So what's the deal?

Perhaps some just do.

Just because Obi-Wan at an eariler age denied taking some death sticks doesn't mean that from that all Jedi deny doing anything different.

Literally the gamut is some do, some don't...and for all we know they change it so the toxins if any don't do crap to them since they can alter body chemistry.

We don't know what smoking is like in Star Wars. Maybe they've refined it in such a way that you retain the high with no significant long-term health risks. After all, Gandalf and just about every other character in Lord of the Rings was a dirty reefer addict.

That sounds like the first Tales of the Jedi: KOTOR book. Master Thon. But I can't see him smoking a pipe. Maybe another book?

I agree that in the SW world, they probably do smoke, but it has been
refined to the point where it probably poses little or no health risk.

Why wouldn't Jedi smoke? Hell, doctors do here on Earth. Just because somebody is smart and respectable doesn't mean that they don't smoke. And anyways, if SW medical technology hasn't found a cure for lung cancer, I bet Force Healing has.

Death Sticks aren't smoked; they're a liquid that's mixed into drinks. The effects are like super methamphetamines, I think.

Interesting info. I never nthought Jedi smoke before since we never saw any Jedi smoke during the films.

You don't know what's in the water pipes. Some friends and me sometimes smoke fruit mixes; they don't do anything except taste good - it's like chewing gum.

Glitterstim has nothing in common with Menalge except that they are both drugs nicknamed spice you fool.

I don't see why not. Obi takes a shot at the bar in AotC's so I don't really see any 'moral' revultion to 'drugs' as such.

When you think about it, LoTR is the most pro-smoking movie in years. Saruman, incidentally, is an anti-smoker ("Your love of the Halfling's Leaf has clearly clouded your mind," spoken to Gandalf).

Speaking of thickness, why is it that whenever I try to make a comparison between two similar things in Dune and Starwars some fanboy always leaps up to screech that they're "not the same!"

Hell, I agree that even the confirmed inspirations for Star Wars (Flash Gordon and the Hidden Fortress) are far from exact analogs to the saga, but that doesn't mean we can't compare them.

Obviously spice in Star Wars isn't so prominent as in Dune, because in Dune they didn't have the technology to jump around space safely until thousands of years after the time of the first Dune trilogy (the time period most fans are familiar with). However, considering the powers it has, one would think that in the vacuum left by the Jedi such a commodity would be in high demand.

It's illegal at least in some places, since Han and others were able to make a an illicit living smuggling it. Other factors such as scarcity and perhaps side effects may have prevented its more widespread use.

Like the Tusken raiders, it's just another one of those passing mentioned things in the canon that adds a little, shall I say "spice" to the universe. The EU provides the backstory. But honestly, how can fellow SW fans deny that Lucas drew inspiration from a lot of other genres & nods to other sci fi in his universe?

If you're suggesting that Tusken Raiders are rip-offs of Fremen, then you are indeed thick.

It's worse, he thinks Spice Melange and Gliterstim Spice are basically the same thing, dispite the fact that the only thing they have in comon is the same nickname. I swear if i had a son that dumb i'd shoot him out of mercy.
