10 Years Before Yavin

Well, thing is that I'm currently writing a SW/Cthulhu Mythos crossover fanfic (!) and it's set 10 years before Yavin.
It goes without saying that I wish as few continuity errors with the rest of the SW universe - canon or apocryphal - in my fanfic.
Particularly, I request as much information about the state of affairs in the galaxy roughly 10 years before Yavin - which ship types and vehicles were in use, whether the Rebel Alliance yet had formed, what the dramatis personae of the SW universe were doing at the time, who was Prime Minister of Kamino and so on...
Just to be sure.
(All of the EU I have read is some "Star Wars: Republic" comics, "Vector Prime" and "Heir Of The Empire" which I'm currently reading)

Here are some of the basics:
* Grand Moff Tarkin's military think tank known as the Maw Installation is working on a superweapons design that will eventually become the Death Star.
*Obi-Wan, Yoda, Kam Soulsar, and other survivors of the Jedi Purge are in hiding.
* Leia is being raised as a princess on Alderran, Luke as a farmboy on Tatooine; they're both about eight to ten at this point.
* Palpatine is in total control, though the pretense of the Senate is still in effect. He may have acquired Mara Jade at this point.
* Thrawn is involved in the Imperial Court.
* Vader will have been in his armor for eight years at this point.
* Mon Mothma, Bail Organa, Gram bel Iblis, and others are already laying the groundwork for the Rebel Alliance.

This is also the timeframe for my fanfic.
Was the Republic called the Empire by now?

The Galactic Republic was superseded by the Galactic Empire approximately twenty years before the Battle of Yavin.

Isn't that the time of AOTC?
The back of my TPM video says it's 30 years before ANH, and AOTC was ten years after that.

Yes, AOTC is ~20 years before Yavin, and EIII is only one or two years after that. The Galactic Empire will likely become official during EIII, but the Republic became the Empire for all intents and purposes when Representative Binks' motion for Emergency Powers passed just prior to the Battle of Geonosis.
Which makes the Empire supersede the Republic approximately 20 years before the Battle of Yavin.

Why, why,
why didn't Qui-Gon just let that AAT run that underwieght giant frog over? The only thing of importance that he ever did was completely and utterly doom the Republic.

I find it delightfully ironic, considering how opposed Qui-Gon would have been to the Empire. I've never hated Jar Jar, but him proposing the vote in AOTC justifies his existence and makes up for any lameness he had, IMO.
Plus, I'm an Imperialist through and through, so you'll find no complaints from me.

Well, I'm in Rogue Squadron, so you know what I have to do to you now.
*STRAFING RUN!* Man, I love doing that.

Is that the EU interpretation, that the Imperial Senate is a mere "pretense"?

Yeah, but as an Imperialist, he'll swoop down in a TIE going "I have you now!"

Well the Senate was, as Tarkin stated in ANH, the last vestiges of the Old Republic. It was there simply for show; Palpatine was in total control.

Foolish terrorist. My shields are impenitrable, and my TIEs are on your tail. You have no chance to survive make your time.

Vader's top Stormtrooper officers seemed to think the Senate was effective enough to be an obstacle ("If word of this gets out, it may generate sympathy for the Rebellion in the Senate...").
My interpretation is that the Senate did still hold power, inasmuch that the people still listened to it. With the Death Star as his ace in the hole, the Emperor disbanded the Senate, and then destroyed Alderaan (a significant political opponent to the Emperor's authority and a financier for the rebellion) as a message. It was only
then that the Senate became irrelevant.

Aha, I was right. He may have said the wrong thing, but I was right. Yeah for me.

Not just Vader's ST officers, but General Tagge and Governor Tarkin as well...
Tagge: "The Rebel Alliance will continue to gain the support of the Imperial Senate..."
Tarkin: "The Imperial Senate will
no longer be of any concern to us."
Robert Treder wrote:My interpretation is that the Senate did still hold power, inasmuch that the people still listened to it.
I agree, but I'd expand on that and suggest that the Senate represented considerable
military power in form of local defense forces native to their home sectors (e.g. the Mon Calamari).

Which would also help explain why Palpatine needed the DS2.

Feh. TIEs are fodder. That'll make it easier. Bigger target.
And there's no such thing as an impenetrable shield. Tell that to Palpatine.

BTW - in case it's not yet finished, if you wish to make it consistent with my fanfic, I can send you the basic details of mine. (though it's top secret)
