Did Chewbacca get a comission?
After Yavin, Luke was made a Commander, and Han became a General. A little later on, so did Lando.
My question is, did Chewbacca ever get an officer's comission? I'd hope the rebel alliance wasn't so speciest.

If Chewbacca had took an commission, he would have had to assume military duties, which would probably have separated him from Han at some point. Because of his life debt he can't do this; he is obligated to protect Han if he sees that Han is in danger.
His leaving the commando team during ROTJ, though, is debatable-- still, I would presume that this is mainly because the team was under guard, and thus (as far as he knew at the time, anyhow) out of immediate danger; he decided to take over an AT-ST so he could rescue Han. As matters turned out, that wasn't how it went...
In any case, Chewbacca cannot reasonably accept a military commission because of his life debt. Of course, the Rebels might accommodate him on this; for example, they might have Han appoint Chewie a member of his staff or something; but Chewbacca, ultimately, would still be forced to obey officers higher-ranked than Han. So I don't see a reason for Chewbacca to accept a commission.

The thing is, Leia is one of the heads of state of the NR, one of its leading politicans. Han is MARRIED to her... your idea is valid enough, I will admit, but one does have to remember that Han originally accepted his commission during the Rebellion. After the Rebellion became the NR, there wasn't as high a need for officers.
Also, remember that Han had gone to the Imperial Academy-- he would've had at least a basic knowledge of the military. Chewie? Freed slave-- true, we don't know much about his past (except that he was a slave), but IIRC Kashyyk was fairly peaceful. No need for a military there. So, Chewie being offered an commission would be like giving a general's golfing buddy a commission... perhaps not the best of analogies, but you get the idea.

Perhaps a honorarium? Not an official military rank, but a honorary rank that allows him to have temporary command if other officers are out of commission? I know, silly idea...

Not really. If he is going out on missions, it would be good to give him a rank so you know where he falls in the chain of command.Elheru Aran wrote:Perhaps a honorarium? Well, in the Jedi Academy Trilogy he leads the team to free the entrapped wookies.. but he could be just an armed observer or freedom fighter, etc. Still, would be nice for him to receive some recognition as it seems like he's little more than a PET.
Even in the circle of friends.. he's really little more than a good dog that can speak and it bothers me to no end.

"Of course, what would really happen is that in Game 7, with the Red Sox winning 20-0 in the 9th inning, with two outs and two strikes on the last Cubs batter, a previously unseen meteor would strike the earth, instantly and forever wiping out all life on the planet, and forever denying the Red Sox a World Series victory..."

He didn't. That's why he was awarded one at the 1996 MTV Lifetime achievement awards.Kreshna Aryaguna Nurzaman wrote:Maybe this is an off-topic, but I didn't see Chewie recieved any medal at the end of ANH.
