The Digital Bits has gotten images of the final coverart for the Star Wars Classic Trilogy DVD set coming this September, which Hyperspace members got a sneek peek on the official site Friday:
http://www.thedigitalbits.com/#swart
If the link changes within the next day or so, I'll try to change the above so that it works.
And of course, the silver widescreen looks better than the gold full frame.
Quite excellent, in my opinion, and appropriately elegant.
EDIT: Updated link.

Sweeeeeet!
I wish the Widescreen version was in Gold though, since I always buy widescreen DVD's, and I like the Gold better.

Platinum looks cooler, and I think is more valuable. Actually I don't know about that last part, I just seem to think it is. Meh.
I am
so getting the Widescreen version.

Do the discs contain both the Original version and the SE Version on the one disc (like Alien), or is Lucas going to make us fork out for two different box sets for it?

There won't be an Original Version, Crown. Don't you remember? SE is Lucas's "intended" vision.

Well there have been quite a few flip-flops about that on the net, so I thought I should ask.

Admittedly I don't know for certain what GL is thinking about this, but my guess is he will only release the SE. Fuck him, anyway.

No original theatrical versions. Ever, is the current and has always been the Lucasfilm position.
However, it is very likely that these will not be the exact Special Editions that were in theatres and previous VHS releases. Continued work on effects enhancements and additions has been going on for quite a while, and it's reported from some unnamed but credible sources that the versions on DVD will be different. It's not as extensive as the ages old rumours of so-called "Archival Editions," but more along the lines of "Special Editions, Part II."

This is why many have gone the route and transferred their LD versions into DVD.

Soon there will be dual-layer DVD+R drives for even greater quality

Unfortunately being the lowly peasant that I am I have none of these "laserdisks" you speak of. Looks like I'm going to be stuck with Greedo shooting first, Han walking on Jabba's tail, Luke screaming like a girl at Bespin and that crap musical number in RotJ.
*cries like a sissy*
I do have the originals on VHS. But I'm scared of putting it into my video recorder, which sometimes likes to eat tapes for breakfast.
I'm in a No-win situation here.

Coolness. Now I can make up for picking up the fullscreen Indiana Jones DVD set by mistake at Kmart.

With many places...nope.
They would just give him an exact same product...even if he claimed it was broken or the wrong product.

Date the OT DVD set goes on sale: Sept. 21.
Date of the anniversary of my birth: Sept. 21.
I'm thinking I know what I'll be asking for.
Oh, and why would anyone *want* the fullscreen version? Just out of curiosity, you understand.

Because some people don't like the black bars.
It's the only answer I have ever really gotten from the couple people who I know dislike Letterbox/Wide Screen.

Small tvs or the misguided belief that you are losing picture are the other explanations.

Actually, for a mistake like that they may be more understanding.

It was a closeout sale. All sales final. The plus side is that I got it for 10% off.
