POSSIBLE Example of New Enhancements for OT DVDs

Post by Spanky The Dolphin »

Found this over at the Digital Bits:

http://www.thedigitalbits.com/rumormill.html

Go there for the picture and discussion, but for those who want something to read (and/or quote), here's the text of the article:
That top image is, supposedly, an actual shot of Ian McDiarmid as Emperor Palpatine, newly inserted into The Empire Strikes Back in place of the original actor (bottom image). This pic has been circulating around the Net for a few days now. The split screen comparison you see here was created by someone on one of the Star Wars fan boards (click here for the original post of the image, along with endless fan debate). But the image at the top (at least the actual face shot of McDiarmid) reportedly leaked from someone involved with the production. We had pretty much dismissed it... BUT. The interesting thing is, we've shown this image to insiders we know have seen the real work (three separate sources now), and they've independently confirmed that the scene HAS changed and that the top image (of McDiarmid in make-up) is authentic. One other scene we've heard is being revamped is the CGI Jabba scene from A New Hope. Look for the digital Jabba to be replaced by a much better looking CG version (likely based on the Episode I digital model of the character).

Tell you what... if this pans out, I don't mind either of these changes. Better still, I'd eat a whole freakin' herd of Bantha if Lucas would just restore the Han/Greedo scene in A New Hope so that Han shoots first again. Anyone care to join me? Cross your fingers, folks... and fire up the barbecue pit.

By the way, we've also been told by sources that the list of Trilogy 4th disc DVD extras circulated by FYE, Best Buy and other online retailers recently (and reported here by The Bits) is "not entirely correct". Like that original prototype DVD packaging from a few weeks ago, it looks like this WAS an early spec list for the disc, but it's not the final one. Hopefully, we'll get official details in the coming weeks.

Stay tuned...

But ... it doesn't look anything like Ian McDiarmid. Or Palpatine/ROTJ, for that matter.

I agree. It would be most pleasing to see Lucas make the holograms look more advanced like in TPM starting with the Emperor and the Imperial Captains in ESB.

Well, it COULD be him.

Remember that the Emperor looked as if he would fall apart in ROTJ, most likely the destruction of his body through the darkside had sped up in the half year, so maybe he planned to change bodies after ROTJ.

But to make it clear. That IS an advancement, absolutely!

I would personally prefer it if they left the OT holograms alone. :|

I agree, what they could do is make them more detailed like those on the prequels.

Im calling BS on this. It looks NOTHING like McDiarmid. Thats not to say I dont want them to change the Holograms. I personally think he should replace the ESB one since the actor doesnt look or sound anything like the one in ROTJ or the prequels.

Even though it looks weird as hell, retrospectively in continuity, since Palpatine's bodies are decaying at a rate such that he does from twenty to ROTJ Palpy in five years or less, it could be more realistic.

But that invokes obscure EU (to the avg watcher) and is poor filmmaking. Get real McDiarmid, or leave it alone.

I say it's a fake. That new photo looks nothing like ROTJ Emperor, however, I say that they should change that scene in the DVD. Also, improving the lightsaber effects in ANH as well as CGI Jabba would sit well with me, but I doubt Lucas will be making any changes at all.

Um, Lucasfilm and ILM have recently confirmed that they have been working on further enhancements, cleanup, and additions to the OT for the DVD release since around 1999.

From what the guys at the Digital Bits say, the image does seem to be a fan creation, though one that's been confirmed by reliable persons to be along the same lines as the actual work. Hopefully, it will most likely look better in reality.

Though I still would prefer them to just leave it alone, from a cinematic stance... :|

They confirmed changes? I was not aware of that. I thought that all these talks of modifications to the DVD versions were just rumors.

They did confirm, although unofficially, I think. And it's not to the extent that the fan-wankish "Archival/Ultimate Edition" lists go to: more than anything, it's more like a "Special Edition, Part 2" affair.

It doesn't look good because Ian's 'dimple' on the chin, looks like a slit in that shot.

I think not. The article did not mention anything about this.

Why I do disagree with fucking around with the OT, and I think most of the holos can be left alone, that is one that really and always has annoyed me.

 It's a zombie!! And his face has the wrong shape to be Palpatines. Actually, now that I think about it, he looks a bit like the Palpatine from Dark Empire II (and possible DE 1 but I've never read it so I wouldn't know)...

I'll believe it when I see it (in the DVD). Anybody get the date this was leaked? (ie: was it april 1st)

Not necessarily a bad thing if it's real of course. Though to me, just from that pic, the old Palpy looks scarier, even if it doesn't look like the current actor playing him in the later movies.

Wrong. The Digital Bits reported it on 8 April, while the MB thread they link to has the pictures posted around 20 March.

I'd like to see the Rancor sequence redone. The worst effect in the entire trilogy, and the theatrical Special Edition left it alone!
