Torpedo Spheres

Post by Laughing Mechanicus »

I've seen these mentioned several times on this board but I've never heard of them, could someone explain what they are, what they do and when they were in service from?

I'm researching all the possible weapons systems an Imperator-I/-II class could carry for the Star Wars game I'm working on.

According to the Imperial SourceBook, Torpedo spheres are 1900m siege platform, whose purpose is to launch an enormous barrage of torpedoes against a planetary shield. The strike is designed to open a temporary hole in the shield, through which a turbolaser can destroy the shield generator.

It sort of looks like a mini-death star, and certainly would not fit onto an ISD. More information can be found here if you scroll down a bit.

Ok, thanks for the info. I thought they were alot smaller than that, in classic EU style they seem a bit overpowered, I mean whats the point of building a Death Star to dsetroy planets if you can just use one of those and then perform a BDZ.

Its more complicated to try to take down the shields and then spend minutes (by ICS figures and my estimates) or hours to destroy the planet in that fashion, even though there are more ISDs and even more Toirpedo spheres than DS's (think about it - using a sphere to knock down shields, then spending a sustained time to render a planet uninhabitalbe - versus the single, planet shattering blast.)

Gimme a few minutes and I can dig up some related info from the ISB

Here, Aaron. That might provide a bit more of an explanation. Its from the "original" source for the sphere. ITs roughly accurate to the ISB (which Sheppard posted online - pm him to ask the link to his site if you're curious.)

I've noticed that that site goes up and down a lot. Maybe just crappy servers. Try it later, and I bet it'll work.

How many torpedoes does it carry? Does it have a limit to how poerful a shield can be destroyed? I was thinking it only worked on weaker shields.
