Would you buy the subtitiled 'Basic' Ep I-VI release?
I was just about to drop this question in a reply to Mange the Swede, but thought: "hey, haven't seen one of these polls in a while."
Now had SW episodes I through VI been released in original language, i.e. 'Basic', with subtitiles (english naturally, for the benefit of the monolinguistical member of the board ) I would buy the "subtitiled 'Basic' version release" (all 6 episodes); would you?
edited once (VI was transposed in the poll )

That depends. Does Han fire first in this version?

If this were a good quality (audio/visual) widescreen release (akin to the "THX Enhanced Trilogy" that was released pre-1997) and I had the option to turn off the subtitles, I wouldn't mind getting it at all.
If it was a cheaply produced foreign bootleg, it'd be hit and miss, because it would probably feature no chapter stops, be non-amamorphic and have other problems, like non-removable subtitles, etc.
I guess this would be the sort of question to ask AFTER Sept 21st, after we've seen first hand just how good (or mediocre) the new widescreen DVD trilogy actually is.
Ideally Lucas would just include the non-SE widescreen versions of the films alongside the enhanced versions on each disc in the regular package. The Alien Quadralogy did that, as did the Collector's release of E.T. Lucas is missing an opportunity here, based on his ego.
If it's just an ego thing on the other hand, he could "show off" just how "improved" the films are by including the originals for a side by side comparison. Otherwise how do you justify selling the same films over and over? (Especially if consumers are nervous that he'll just release an HD-DVD or Blu-Ray enhanced version in another 1-2 years.)

WHOA: oops, I was drunk when I read your post, programmed to answer in my usual fanboy purist manner, you mean posted in the fictional "basic" language of the Star Wars universe. What would it sound like? Backwards english? A "huttese" blend of some real-life languages like bengalese and portugese or something? It'd be interesting, but I probably wouldn't buy it, maybe rent it once just for the novelty.
The language would have to be made up since we've never gotten any sense of what basic "sounds like" other than english, which of course it's "Translated into" for our benefit. Plus without lip-synchronization it might look a little funny anyway. We've come to expect to hear the way the lines sound in the "original language" that Lucas made the films in (ditto with the novelisations, scripts, radio dramas, etc) so everything we know of Star Wars is in english.
It's not the same for languages like French, German, etc because those countries are having the movies translated 'from the original languages' in which they were created.

Yes. If the writing on the DS Tractor beam was changed back to Aurebesh.

Nope. I have no interest in having to think during a popcorn movie.

I'd buy one where the speech is in Basic, but where the subtitles are in a non-Basic fictional language from the SW universe.
What about a version where the entire film has been given a makeover so that the colours are only seen in the infrared spectre, and the subtitles are in the native language of the Kaminoans? I can imagine the ad campaign... "See the SW saga through the eyes of a Grey!"

What is with your unhealthy obsession with the Kaminoans?

One of Simon's various phobia-fetishes. The only reason he freaks out over the Kaminoans is because they vaguely resemble Grays, which he's bizarrely obsessed over.
I agree, though. It's gotten really old and annoying.

They could do that to Predator, make the entire movie in IR. The parts that switch to Predvision would be normal.Peregrin Toker wrote:I'd buy one where the speech is in Basic, but where the subtitles are in a non-Basic fictional language from the SW universe.

I still wonder what you mean by "phobia-fetish"? How can something simultaneously be a phobia and a fetish?

By phobia-fetish, I mean that you appear to be simultaniously uncomfortable about certain topics (such as Grays), yet you can't seem to stop talking about them or mentioning them.
You remind me of that Onion article about the little kid who won't shut up about raccoons.

I think we're more likely to see LoTR done in Elvish. (Which tongue though remains to be seen.)
That I would pay to see.

It wouldn't be done in Elvish (Quenya or Sindarin, the latter being more modern), but rather Westron (the Language of the West), since that's what the Common Tongue was in Middle-earth durning the Third Age.

I knew that much, I meant because an all Elvish production would have more appeal to the masses, it's the new Klingon.Spanky The Dolphin wrote:It wouldn't be done in Elvish (Quenya or Sindarin, the latter being more modern), but rather Westron (the Language of the West), since that's what the Common Tongue was in Middle-earth durning the Third Age.

I would want a copy of this, that would be cool, better yet: the whole thing retold (in IR) from the Predator's perspecetive. (luckily it is not a very talkative movie from his perspective, so the language barrier should not be too big a problem for the audience )YT300000 wrote:They could do that to Predator, make the entire movie in IR. It would only be appropriate to use Elvish, if the story was retold from their perspective.Spanky The Dolphin wrote:It wouldn't be done in Elvish (Quenya or Sindarin, ...), but rather Westron (the Language of the West)...
(and sadly I wouldn't want to learn to speak either anyhow...)
