Does the empire FTL coms net require relay stations or can they do direct FTL coms to any where in the empire?

Sorry if this question has been asked before.

It requires the Holonet for extreme distances, but in VOTF and SOTP (Zahn's duology) it is shown that individual ships (Stardestroyers in this case) can send signal out on their own for a certain distance.

Anyone disagree?

So if they are out of Holonet range, can they drop relays and links to extend the holonet? If they cant I'll just have it doing direct trannys, its not biggie.

Thanks for the help Crown :)

Well lets see according to WEG the Emperor shut down and canabalized the holonet. Command vessels and the Courscant have the only holonet trancievers.

Look under this sites ATOC revalations and read Mike's article on Hyperwave communications. It should answer any other questions.

Looking at the variety of sources its pretty much a given that you can do FTL coms all the time. I know of no less than a dozen instances where persons on starships in different systems communicated in real time thus requiring FTL coms and they never mentioned using the Holonet so its likely to be a direct connection. Furthermore AOTC has Obi-Wan doing a direct beam to Anakin's ship on Tatooine, which then relay's the message to Coruscant 9thoguh it might use boosters/relays elsehwere in the line).

The basic point is that Hyperwave requires a lot of power but it has huge range and doesn't requrie relay stations. The Holonet has more bandwidth, more channels, and probably requires less power since you only have topump out enough juice to reach the nearest "tower."

The easiest comparison between the two would be two-way radio (Hyperwave) compared with cell-phones (Holonet). Both can be done and each has their tradeoff.
