Population of the empire

The question is: What is the actual population of the Galactic Empire?
What would be the average population of one of the member worlds and one of the colony worlds like Tatooine?
How many planetary cities like Coruscant and Naal Hutta do exist?

Please, I would like sensible figures. Nothing about "the hundreds of quadrillions that live in Coruscant". I would particularly thank any canon reference (from the novelizations).

How is that not sensible? You count in the entire surface of the planet, multiply it by the thousands of levels, and 1 trillion becomes an unreasonably conservative estimate.

Several quadrillion, from what I remember.

I believe that estimates put it the population of Coruscant in the hundreds of trillions, even when accounting the industrial and commercial areas seen in AotC.

And I don't see what would keep a galaxy-spanning empire from having a galactic population in the quintillions.

The LOWEST number I've seen in any Star Wars product is 1 trillion

According to KOTOR the population of Tatooine is approximately 10,000 non-native settlers and perhaps a million indigenous peoples. The heavily-developed member worlds like Bonadon and Corellia probably have populations in the low tens of billions.

City-wide planets are very rare, perhaps less than a dozen. I don't think any others have been mentioned.

That's absolutely ridiculous, there are trillions of folks on Coruscant alone!

That does not help us much.
KOTOR is set 4000 years before the movies.

IIRC, the AOTC ICS refers to "quadrillions of engineers," in talking about the early hyperspace era. A quintillion might even be low for galactic population.

I wouldn't be surprised if there were more than 10,000 non-native in just Mos Eisly and Mos Espa alone. A fricking Earth suburb has more people than that.

Heavily populated planets like Corellia (unless Corellia is 30% beautiful fields or something) would easily have populations in the hundreds of billions or trillions. These people cover their cities in miles-high skyscrapers; they'd EASILY have hundreds of times the population of Earth.

1 trillion for the whole empire is a bad joke.

According to theEpisode I Inside the Worlds book, Tatooine's official, outdated population is 200K. Keep in mind that a census hasn't been conducted on Tattooine for many years, and only a small portion of the northern hemisphere is habitable.

One trillion was never given as the population of the entire Empire, but is the Official population for Coruscant, though it is realistically too low.

Saxton said on his site that worldwide surface inhabitance with the population density of a suburb in Perth, Australia would have a population of several trillion- so yeah, whoever did that had no idea how little a trillion is on the galactic scale of things.

As for the idea of a million locals, doesn't that seem kind of low? The Jawas are ubiquitous, and according to The Star Wars Illustrated Universe they actually have their own cities- and Jawas aren't exactly high maintenance creatures.

For Tatooine?

Yeah, 200K does seems rather low, but as it says in the Inside the Worlds books, it is an outdated estimate, and only a small portion of one hemisphere is cool enough to be habitable.

I'd assume that the number might be the number of colonists from the second colonisation wave 900 years ago (or maybe the total from both waves), or might only count for truly "permanent" citizens.

But I wouldn't be surprised if Tatooine's "real" population was at least several million, if we count everyone actually living on the planet and not just taking an extended leave while "passing through."

Not neccesarily, deserts have traditionally been a low population density world. The amount of "permament" residents should be relatively low, compared to the transitional residents like Han.

IIRC, According to Coruscant and the Core Worlds, a sourcebook by WOTC:

Alderaan: 4 billion
Corellia: 5 billion (I'm not too sure on this one, it was between 3-5 billion)
Kuat: 3 billion (on the surface of the planet)
Coruscant: 1 trillion (one of this book's authors, Dan Wallace, commented on TF.N that even he thought this number was an underestimate, but he was required to stick to the official number)
Metellos: 900 billion
Corulag: 15 billion
Brentaal: 65 billion
Chandrilla: 2 billion

I think that gives you a decent idea of the range of what Core Worlds' populations are in. The book has a few planets under 1 billion, but most of those entries are for remote or unimportant Core Worlds (e.g. N'zoth, Galantos, Abregado-Rae)

Other WOTC source material (website info mostly)

Geonosis (OR): 100 billion
Kamino (OR): 1 billion
Mon Calamari (OR): 27 billion (plenty for a water world, I must say)
Aargau (CW): 4.8 billion
Adumar (WS): 3.1 billion
Ando (OR): 850,000
Carida (InR): 25 million
Kessel(OR): 11,100
Thyferra (Col): 117 million
Barab I(OR): 1.4 billion
Vandelhelm (ExR): 40 million
Haruun Kal (MR): 705,300
Velmor (ExR): 892,000
Makem Te(OR): 2 billion
Zeltros (InR): 5.3 billion

Mid Rin worlds from HoloNet News:

1. Naboo: 625 million
2. Monastary: 35 million
3. Kalarba: 750 million
4. Cerea: 450 million
5. Sneeve: 1.1 billion
6. Bimmisaari: 20 million
7. Durkteel: 3.2 billion
8. Ord Tessebok: 2.5 billion
9. Garos IV: 22 million
10. Ord Varee: 3.1 billion

True enough

However, RPG stats must be taken with certain degree of 'grain of salt'

best bet, times those numbers by 10

If I remember correctly, Star by Star mentioned that there were trillions of people on Coruscant, and only 40 billion people or so managed to evacuate within the short time they had before the Yuuzhan Vong conquered it.

DidnĀ“t "BactaWar" claim, that there were only 10,000 humans and 2 million Ashern living on Thyferra?

All those population-numbers seem to be way to low, until those worlds are important for something else than population (like Kuat is for shipbuilding) and there are other worlds, that are completely devoted to living, but otherwise unimportant.

Could it be, that the population in the SW-galaxy is in decline (like it is currently in most modern countries here on earth) or that they once suffered something like a galaxy-wide spanish flu and that the population-numbers have been stable since then?

We already covered that: it was for Coruscant.
