How the heck do these "seismic charges" work? I mean, it looks amazingly cool, a 2d shockwave going through space and slicing shit into pieces, but how the heck does that stuff work?

I think Mike W or Saxton (forget who) said it might be an exotic force field technology application or something.

That's about the only way it can be explained. The 2-d nature of the explosion requires some kind of special technology being involved to make sense. In this case, possibly a temporary forcefield that forms immediately before the explosion that forces it to detonate in only two dimensions. Such a concentrated shockwave is more effective where it hits since it doesn't spread out the energy involved as much as an omnidirectional explosion would. In space it makes a poor weapon, which is why Mike has speculated in the seismic charges being a ground assault weapon.
A similar technology might explain thermal detonators which are said to leave everything outside a specific radius unharmed.
