How does the Empire gets its recources

Post by wautd »

To build a fleet of ISD's, a DS, ... all requires vast amounts of recources. The empire got a whole galaxy to take it from and have the industrial capability to build it but how do they get the recources to do it? (deep core mining? asteroids?)

Asteroids and dead worlds. How much do you think we could get out of Mars if we didn't care about its ecology (if any)?

Probably also uses black hole and red dwarf instalations for power generation/collection.

Power generation really doesn't seem to be an issue in SW, and it probably isn't necessary to transport energy between star-systems.

A lot of their materials my be able to be synthesized from almost anything.

Hypermatter, like antimatter, is simply ultra-dense energy storage. I seriously doubt its naturally occuring, which means they need an original energy source which they collect and store in hypermatter.

Degenerate stellar corpses, namely black holes, are at the top of the list.

If duplicators work on a molecular level, I don't think they're capable of elemental transmutation.

Hey! We are capable of elemental transmutation!

It's just very expensive and only used for scientific research into Trans-Uranium elements. It has no commercial applications, and likely thet will be the case in the SW universe too: any element that can be mined, no matter how rare it may be, is cheaper to mine then to make from 'scratch'.

The problem is that there are lots of mentions to strange minerals that can't be natural if they are transuranic and must be produced from scratch then.

Strip mining of dead planets, asteroid mining, some stuff is artificially made, they harvest some material from gas giants and some from stars... pretty much they have the baility to get whatever they need from the cheapest source.

Any clue what their high-tolerance construction materials and armor come from?

There are two posibilities:

1. They artificially create them somewhere from either energy or other materials.
2. They mine them and they are just known elements with fancy names, much like depleted uranium has come to be duranium in Trek. High tolerance behaviour may come from something similar to a deflector field.

Clearly, despite what the EU says about them being solid alloys, some of them have to be composite materials. Only way to effectively cut down the radiation in say a starfighter. So that will help somewhat. Then if they manufacture on a nano or smaller level to remove defects that could help a little biut two. But really those would be like adding pennies to a fund that required millions of dollars. There are references to Tensor fields and such, that might have something to do with it.

That or they could be completely artifically made materials that thus elude all we know

Well, I'm pretty sure like people have said above.. asteroids and strip mining of worlds. Remember the lie whatsherface was told so she would help design the World Devastators?

Then you have Lando's Nklon and Undersea mining systems.

Just one question though, if Tibanna gas is so valuable and used in everything and found chiefly on ONE world to supply to an entire galaxy.. you're taking out a mass amount of material from a world.. when will that world go bone dry?

Tibanna is apprently not suppiled by one world or don't you think that the Empire would've controlled it lock, stock and barrel?

Tibanna gas is quite plentiful. Allston's second NJO book mentions its harvesting from stars, and it is harvested from a number of gas giants. It is also artificially created. The big deal about bespin is that the stuff is both already processed (misprocessing or "spin sealing" a batch can have bad results, plus it adds to the production cost) and is easily collected due to the habitable zone (no need for protection suits or hardened equipment again decreasing production costs).
