The panels on TIE fighters. what are they used for?

First and foremost, they *cannot* be solar panel, because sunlight doesn't provide sufficient power to escape planet's gravity well.

I agree with Saxton that those panels are radiators, because something as small as TIE fighter, with enormously powerful reactor, surely needs to dissipate the heat.
