When did the Mon Cals join the rebel alliance?

I was sort of wondering when the Mon Cal's and their venerable cruisers joined the Rebel Alliance. I don't remember seeing them before Episode VI, was wondering if there was anything in any novels about it...

The Empire attempted to enslave their homeworld and they rebelled, so they decided to join the Rebellion before ANH. In the Essential guide to the Chronology it says that a Rebel fleet with Mon Cal cruisers attepmted to distract an Imperial invasion fleet that was going to seek their revenge on Yavin IV after the Death Star incident.
EDIT: Spoilers for EP III...There is a scene where a group of senators, one being Mon Cal, are having a meeting about a Rebellion against the Empire.

The Star Warriors hooked up with Adm. Ackbar soon before the Rebel base on Hoth was established. (Classic SW comics)

However, that origin is now in doubt thanks to the apperance of Mon Cal in the
Clone Wars cartoon.

How? Are they using armed MC cruisers or other supposedly GCW era units?

The Seps. tried to invade Mon Cal to use as a launching ground and Jedi and Clone troopers went after them; thus, gone is the whole Mon Cal was unknown to the rest of the galaxy until the Empire tried to invade during the GCW origin.
Maybe SW has its own TCW...

WARNING: MIGHT CONTAIN (small) SPOILER FOR EPISODE III (note: this is not meant to be shouting):
Since it has been shown from official sources (most notably the Insider) that Calamarians will appear in Episode III, their history must be rewritten. If I remember correctly, RPG sources and other EU material, claimed that the first contact was made with the Empire.

In fact the Time line is closer to just after the Battle of Yavin, Adm Ackbar was Tarkins personal slave, after freeing him just before the Death Star launched he returned hom and convinced the Mon Cal goverment to back the rebellion and strap on some TL's to their galatic cruise ships. Reference taken from Darksaber.

So the guy went from slave to Admiral in about five years? This is why I always hated KJA.

I think the whole "Ackbar was an ex slave" thing was pre-Darksabre, actually.
And besides, he probably was a flag officer in the Calamarian military before being carried off in chains after Calamari was crushed.

Ackbar's promotion was due in part to the sucess of the B-Wing project, which he was in charge of.

Still, designing a starfighter and commanding a fleet of ships is not the same thing.

I just have a question about the role of the Mon Cal in the Clone Wars. In the big Republic #50 issue the Mon Cal are helping the Sepretists try to invade the Clone Trooper cloning facilities on Kamino. But in the Clone Wars cartoons the Mon Cal help the Republic defeat a Sepretist backed Quarren force on Mon Cal.
So what is the real role of the Mon Cal in the Clone Wars

Both.
Keep in mind, the Mon Cal, overall, could be divided over the issue. Some Mon Cals supported the Old Republic, while others joined the Separationists. I don't see every member of a given species holding the same political opinion or should even be stereotyped with having the same loyalities. Frankly, that's smells like a brain bug.

Ackbar was established to be Tarkin's slave in X-wing. I'm pretty sure that's before the revival of the EU.

Another part of Ackbars promotion to Admiral was that under Tarkin he was well versed in the tactics he and other Imps used.

I was under the impression that Tarkin was more of a politician and not a line officer.

He was in the capacity as Tarkin Doctrine and his position as Grand Moff.
He served a stint as a line officer but I just don't see him in the same capacity as Motti.
Still I say Ackbar had to have at one time demonstrated the capcity as a line officer and progressed from there, because what we know of Tarkin...saying an advancedment because he knew the man's tactics is the same as saying a man knew of Bail Organa's fleet tactical abilities.

Ackbar did learn some from Tarkin. I must have not been clear if so sorry. Ackbar also learnd other Imperial Officars tactics from being around with Tarkin.

Still rather weak if you think about it to raise him not just to line officer but of a rank of Admiral.
Literally this would be if you hung around Hitler and learned some bits from Rommel and gang.
Doubt any of the Allied would raise you to such an exalted rank on that alone which is why I say he has shown some immense strategic capablitiy versus just him being around Tarkin.

I just found something. He was raised from Commander to Admiral for Designing the B-wing and for bringing the Mon Cals into the Rebellion. I know its kind of sad but they had to reward him somehow.

Just as I said. Yes, while the B-Wing was hard to produce and use, it packed a much-needed punch for the Alliance. Besides, the design is one of my favorites for SW fighters.
