He seemed to be power hungry, but also intelligent enough to stand a chance at pulling it off. He had the means, and the motive is fairly self explanatory.

I guess the proper question should be "To what extent did Zaarin intend to rule?"
Did he really think he could take over the entire Empire? Obviously he had followers on the order of several thousand people, but that's insignificant next to the Empire. Did he intend to sway the loyalties of many more Imperials?
Stele engages his main force in the game, and that force would be easily put down by Piett's fleet at Endor. Perhaps he only wanted to take over a small part of the Empire.
Of all the things we don't know about his motives, we do know this: he was gravely mistaken if he thought he could get away with any defection. Such is the fate of enemies of the Empire.

And you may ask yourself, 'Where does that highway go to?'

Additionally, where does the 'Stele' thing come from?

IIRC, that would be the game's main character, from the short novel that came with some of the original versions of TIE Fighter.Vympel wrote: Additionally, where does the 'Stele' thing come from?

What's his full name? I wanna play TIE Fighter using that name now

I don't remember that being the case when I first played TIE Fighter back in 1994, or the Collector's CD in 95 (or was it 96) or the current Win 95 version I have now ..

Maarek Stele. And this is the info on him from the "Completely Unofficial Star Wars Encyclopedia":Vympel wrote:What's his full name? I wanna play TIE Fighter using that name now
Stele, Maarek
only son of Kerek and Marina Stele, Maarek grew up like most young boys on backwater planets, racing swoops at breakneck speeds in his spare time. After the abduction of his father, Maarek and his mother hid in one of the planet's lesser-known cities, until his participation in a swoop stunt provided Maarek's name to the Bordali. They sent Gwadj to kidnap Maarek and Marina, but the Empire chose that very moment to invade the Taroon System. Maarek was taken away and conscripted as a repair technician. After a few months, Maarek was sufficiently knowledgeable about TIE fighters that he was allowed to take them for test runs after finishing repairs. On one such flight, near Farboon, he was the only fighter launched when Admiral Mordon's shuttle was intercepted by Alliance starfighters. Maarek came to his rescue, and was given a chance to become an Imperial pilot. He jumped at the chance, and went on to become one of the Empire's most fearsome TIE pilots. When Arden Lyn joined rogue Admiral Zaarin in an attempt to kidnap Emperor Palpatine, Maarek provided support to Darth Vader himself in preventing the coup. This earned him the attention of the Emperor, who recognized that Maarek had some sensitivity to the Force. He was later trained by the Prophets of the Dark Side, earning the rank of Tan, and in the wake of the Battle of Endor, he served with the 181st Imperial Fighter Group under Soontir Fel.

I think Zaarin initially wanted to take over the Empire, hence his attempt to kidnap the Emperor (which was **I**, instead of Marek Stele, who actually rescued His Majesty from the traitorous Zaarin. Die, Zaarin. DIE DIE DIE!!!! ).
But after his kidnapping failed, I think he could only hope, at best, ruling a small portion of the Empire. His pitiful forces are no match against the whole Imperial Navy.

That's Imperial STARFLEET, GENERAL Nurzaman. You may be one of the highest ranking, skilled pilots in the Emperor's STARFLEET; but I'll be damned if a lowly Stormtrooper can't correct you about simple matters of nomenclatureKreshna Aryaguna Nurzaman wrote:His pitiful forces are no match against the whole Imperial Navy.

"STARFLEET"? Where did you get that nomenclature anyway? IIRC it is Imperial Navy on many sources (including TF manual).Vympel wrote:That's Imperial STARFLEET, GENERAL Nurzaman. Just FYI, if you're using WinXP, you should set compatibility mode to Win 95. Otherwise it wouldn't run... And the SFX or MIDI music may not run at all with certain soundcards. I once fixed the problem by **repeatedly** running the setup program until the sounds can be heard (using Sound Blaster compatible for SFX and General MIDI for the music), but I don't know if the solution can work again in other circumstances.Vympel wrote:Cool.

It should be noted at least two other Grand Admirals went rogue besides Zaarin, although this was post-Endor.
The Imperial "Navy" has been referred to as a "star fleet" before both in canon (primary and secondary - anyone remember the Dodonna quote? But also quite a bit in the Radio dramas) But in most contexts, "star fleet" seems to refer to a segment of the overall navy, not the entire navy itself. (IIRC the Death Squadron was called a "star fleet" in TESB Radio drama.)

The Imperial Officer guy says that Zaarin wants to take control of the Empire by kidnapping Palpatine. Attacking the Emperor directly would be much easier than trying to fight the millions of ships.Imperial Flight Officer before saving Emperor wrote:Admiral Zaarin has committed the ultimate deceit. While feigning support in the battle against Harkov's forces, Zaarin is attempting to overthrow the Emperor by abducting him from his Imperial Star Destroyer at Coruscant.
This is what the officer in the game tells you concerning the subject of this thread.Imperial Flight Officer after saving Emperor wrote:We can only guess at what provoked Zaarin to attempt his coup d'etat.
The quotes are copied from the missions within the game itself
The funny thing is, Palpatine would have killed him the instant they met face to face.Seggybop wrote:The Imperial Officer guy says that Zaarin wants to take control of the Empire by kidnapping Palpatine. Right Eleas.
It would appear he kept his Sith affiliation, or at least powers, secret from his GAs, or at least some of them. Typical of Palpy: wheels within wheels, most wheels blind to each other.
Wise policy: If Zaarin had succeded Palpy would have has an ace up his sleeve & Zaarin a burr op his (insert appropriate piece of anatomy)

Indeed. Even Sith Lords are endangered by exploding reactors, capital scale turbolasers and suchlike.Connor MacLeod wrote:True, although Vader's haste in rescuing the Emperor indicates there might be SOME chance he would be killed, even if he could take care of Zaarin's whole fleet singlehandedly (accidents do happen.)
